Karma

I have often wondered about Karma –  “what goes around comes around?”.  It generally seems that Karma is more   a hit than a miss.   I do something I  think is super special and …. nothing.  Not a thank-you, not a thumbs up from the universe, Nada!  Then someone does something totally nasty to me and …. the universe beams down on them. All the while, Karma is nowhere to be found.  

Then there are the other times –  those times when I am just trucking along, totally oblivious to Karma.  I am not trying to bargain with her or pressure her or sneak anything past her, and there she is!

In the past few days, Karma has just been there!   It started off in such a simple manner that it hardly seemed ‘Karma‘ worthy.

Before we received our recent heavy dump of fresh snow, Kat and I had resumed our daily walk.   Dan had  been joining us.  After a few days, the walks started to bother him – a lot!   Dan is a big man.  He has been working in a steel plant, walking miles and miles, on cement floors, wearing heavy steel toed and steel plate metguard work boots for decades.  His feet have taken a beating.  Since he has been off of work for a few months now, the feeling seems to be coming back to them, making things even worse than usual. 

I knew Dan had foot issues.  I knew he had a number of thick callouses and problems with his nails.   It is one thing to know it and another to really know it. One day Dan was saying how much his feet always bother him and it just hit me how much discomfort he was in.   I started wondering if I could do anything to help. 

The next day we went shopping and I looked around for foot care products.   We came home with some Dr. Teal’s Epson salts.  At home, I found a rubber basin and some foot lotion.  That night, I brought everything out and asked Dan if we could try soaking his feet.    He was more than willing.   Now, this has become a thing we do.  Every night I fix a warm basin of water with Epsom salts, he soaks his feet, one at a time, and as they come out I dry them and massage them with foot cream.

Our evening ritual takes less than an hour from start to finish.   Dan’s feet started looking and feeling better by the third night in. It was amazing.

What was even more amazing, was the unexpected arrival of Karma. As Dan’s feet have been healing, I have found it pleasant and relaxing to work our way through our evening routine. It is like our own little spa date every night. As a bonus, my hands are smoother and softer than they have been for years, the achy stiffness has been melting away, and my dexterity is improving daily. Thank you, Karma!

  2. We used to have one but our house has so few available electrical outlets that I never used it. Now we can’t find it. Dan is enjoying just soaking his feet in these Epson salts. They smell nice too 😊

  9. My husband had sore feet too. He wore two pairs of thick socks with steel toe boots.
    Karma is a hindu thing. I’m not hindu and dont let it in my head.The universe is a creature like you and me. Its not God.And God is merciful.

  10. Dan had trouble finding boots wide enough for his feet – and high enough with those metguards. I don’t think he could wear two pairs of socks. I didn’t realize Karma was relative to any religion. I thought it was just a golden rule kind of thing.

  11. Tell Dan to try a size up. As we get older/heavier our feet flatten(?is that the word?). My size 8s are now size 10! And I always got high heels in a bigger size. Too painful not to. A shoe salesman told me once thatI should fit shoes mid day when feet were sweatty and puffy.

  12. Dan’s feet are short. Work boots/shoes are a real hard for for him. We have spent hours looking for sandals for him. It is hard finding anything for him! We had to get him a wedding ring from a pawn shop because jewellery stores don’t carry ones that are big enough to be sizes for him. (They can only go up two sizes).
    How did you make out with your Bleeding Heart? I am worried about Dan’s. It had sprouts two inches high and we got a foot or so of snow yet. It is still covered with snow but should melt this weekend.

  13. Haven’t found one yet. Transportation is tough. Can you cover your plants root area with leaves or pine needles?(mulch) Heres hoping for the best. Or something to cover the plant and let in light.

  14. We did over winter (you pull all the leaves off when they die off in the fall). This snow was sort of expected but it was supposed to be half an inch a day for a week. We went to bed and it was about +5 and dry. Got up to a ton of snow. I went to put Kat out in the morning and the snow was level with our back landing (3 steps high). Kat was so confused.
    I wish I could send you one but I don’t think the border guards would be too happy with that. They are kind of touchy about live plants. 🙄

  19. Thank you, Dorothy! It is nice that after 22 years of marriage we actually have the time together to create such rituals. Between his 24/7 shift work and my Monday to Friday 8-5, we barely saw each other when we both worked.

  23. I noticed you are using Epsom Salts with Hemp Seed Oil. I have been using a CBD cream for the osteoarthritis in my hands and finding it really helps. Cannabis-adjacent products are turning out to have more medicinal benefits than we knew!

  27. This is true. I usually buy plain Epsom salts but for some reason Walmart has been totally out of them for two weeks. 🤷. Dan likes these ones so will probably just stick with them for him.

  30. That is some great Karma! Reminds me of when I use to give my dad a pedicure as a child because his foot was so callused. I hope he takes care of them, haven’t seen his feet in ages.
