Daily Food Diary – Day 261 of 365 Days

Today it is 261 Days since I started posting my Daily Food Diary. 💓

Today it is also my sister Elaine’s BIRTHDAY!

Happy Birthday Elaine! 🎈

Speaking of birthday cake… I love cake, I love icing, and I especially love the icing on commercially made cakes. 👍

Unfortunately, I (as well as my daughter and her daughters) cannot eat yeast and commercially baked anything these days is made with powdered egg whites – which are made with yeast

That is just one of the allergy/ intolerances discoveries that I have made recently.

A few weeks ago, I ate something that should have been perfectly fine.  I immediately got seriously bloated and started experiencing violent abdominal cramps.  🙄

I checked the ingredients and the only thing that was slightly questionable was that the product contained palm oil.  I decided to keep that in mind.

A couple of days later, daughter Jen messaged  me that she was violently ill.  She sent me the nutritional label/ingredient list for what she had just eaten…and it noted  palm oil.

I have been fine since, but Jen has been checking anything she eats for palm oil (she has several severe food allergies so she is generally extra careful).

She has not been feeling well for some time and been experiencing allergy type issues – but she couldn’t pinpoint the issue.

This morning she messaged me that she happened to notice that the margarine that she has been using for cooking and baking has palm oil in it now.

No doubt, palm oil is becoming as ubiquitous as yeast!

That is the issue I have with a number of professionals – business administrators, doctors, investment counsellors, chefs apparently… They find one thing that works and that becomes the norm for the entire industry  – until it turns out that the norm doesn’t work all that well. (At least for some  of their customers) 🤦

In the meantime  buyer beware, be mindful, be alert…

  1. Having experienced anaphylaxis twice before being allergy tested, I completely understand severe food allergies, Anne. It’s a pretty frightening thing when one has an extreme reaction. I carry an epi pen whenever I’m dining away from home. Your wave petunias are stunning! My Mom had a small, successful greenhouse for several years and she always said that petunias were at their best come mid September.

  2. Thank you, Terry. Those petunias were from a different year. The squirrels have destroyed most of them this year (burying peanuts). Jen carries an epic pen but she has so many food allergies she has to be vigilant. I have experienced anaphylaxis once – fortunately we were at a birthday party and there was an ER nurse there. He gave me a couple of antihistamines and stayed with me until I got through it. I still have no idea what set it off. Something weird in a nut mix. 🙄

  3. My two severe reactions (many yrs ago) took me to emergency where I had to have adrenaline injected, as my airway was almost completely closed off by the time I got to hospital. Not fun for sure. Now, I recognize the warning signs and I quickly take antihistamines… so far, that has worked 🤞

  4. I know Jen always has antihistamines with her too. I don’t normally use anything stronger than Claritin because of my respiratory issues. I don’t know if Claritin would be effective enough to take on anaphylaxis. I’m glad you have been able to deal with your allergies since those first two scares. 💞

  5. Wow Anne, I really hope that Jen feels much better very quickly. I’ve read somewhere that palm oil is not good! I too love all that yummy icing but can’t eat it as you know, darn diabetes!

  6. I remember now seeing a show about where the palm oil comes from, huge plots of land with huge palm trees everywhere. Corporations don’t really care about people’s health, they value money which is sickening.
