Daily Food Diary – Day 167 of 365

It is 167 Days since I started posting my Daily Food Diary.

Yesterday was NOT my best effort when it came to maintaining a healthy diet.  My last few days haven’t been a great effort. But, like everything else in life, I got to decide and I decided to ‘take a break’ rather than make health and wellness my top priority.

I can’t say it was a great decision.   Travelling for a number of hours is hard on my lungs.  I  do not move enough to keep my lungs clear.  Traveling through forest fire smoke, to an  area  enveloped in  forest fire smoke  for a few days,  was not good.  Being negligent  about clearing my lungs, doing my aerobics,  and managing my diet was on me.  But… I stayed accountable and I  take responsibility for the consequences of the decisions I made.

I cannot change the decisions I made, but I can and will get back on track.  And… I will  be prepared to make better choices the next time we go away.  There are some things I cannot control (like forest fire smoke).   I can eat better, do my aerobics and lung clearing, and plan stops for moving around during our trips – even if that means having to do occasional  walkthroughs at malls or big box stores, to avoid smoke or inclement weather.

Despite everything, we had a good week, quality time with family, and we are back home happy for the memories we made.

First time on a trampoline – just standing up was a win.
And first time on a zipline.
Molly wallowing in the attention of Lucas and friend Emily.
Dan and Amanda’s deck.  The gazebo holds a huge round gas firepit, next is the lounging area, and the bottom area is the dining area.  The original deck, to the side of the house, houses the hot tub, barbecue, smoker, and flat grille.

Everything at Dan and Amanda’s is designed to keep their family active and to entertain visitors.  The kids have their zipline and trampoline, a geodesic climbing structure, and a wooden playhouse with a slide leading down to their sandbox.  Their above ground pool needs to be replaced this year.  Dan and Amanda  are in the process  of designing an addition to their deck to build  in the new pool.

As much as it is all pretty impressive, nothing is designed to impress.  Everything indoors and out is built to be functional (and fun).

Daily Food Diary – Day 156 of 365

It is 156 Days since I began my Daily Food Diary.  That is more than posting here on my blog, consistently for the past 156 days.   That is 156 Days of being mindful of everything I consume and making deliberate decisions to consume or to walk away.   My life is all about balance, so perfection has never been my goal, but after 156 days, my diet has improved. 🙌

Our yard is also improving.  Dan finished installing the new planters he built for the front yard.

This one replaced the wood landscaping log one that had seen its best days.  Dan cleaned out a LOT of lilies, trimmed a LOT of raggedy growth off of the Weeping Willow, and added a LOT of fresh dirt.
This planter is just to clean up an area under our bedroom window.  I love the lattice!  The flowers are coming along nicely but they disappeared in the morning sun. 🙄

Daily Food Diary – Day 121 of 365

It is Day 121 of my 375 Day Food Diary! 🎊

Yesterday was the first day of May.   This month, I am going to focus on the saturated fat in the foods I consume each day.   I will share this info every day on my blog.  I will still be  monitoring my sodium and processed sugar consumption, but I won’t be sharing that on here each day – just to keep the focus on saturated fats.

A few number related notes for today..

  • I now weigh 125 pounds (at 5′ -1″ tall). That is down 35 pounds  from 160 pounds that I was at three years ago.  It is 8 pounds down from the 133 pounds that I weighed when I started my Daily Food Diary on January 1st.
  • In April, it became obvious that there were two things that I was consuming that were detrimental to my respiratory health –  processed sugar and carbonated water.  I have cut back on both A LOT.  I have also been walking further, faster, and more frequently which is beneficial to my respiratory health.    Pre – April, my blood oxygen would run 86 to 95 %.  This past week it has been 92 to 99%      * Fun fact – % blood oxygen refers to the percent of red blood cells that contain oxygen
  • Since starting my Daily Food Diary, I have stopped the mindless snacking, between meals and dedicated tea time.    Cutting back on processed sugar in April has had a huge effect on my appetite at mealtime.  Last night, I had 2 chicken drumsticks and 1/2 package of ramen noodles for supper.  A couple of months ago, I would have  eaten 3 or 4 drumsticks and a full package of ramen  noodles.
  • Getting back to saturated fats… My goal for each day is to stay under 13.75 grams of saturated fats.  That is 10% of my total goal of 1247 calories which is  124.7.  (2000 cal x 10% = 200 = 22 grams of saturated fat)  Mathing it out, that makes my goal 13.75 grams per day.

Maintaining, posting, or reading a Daily Food Diary may not seem terribly exciting  or effective,  on a day to day basis.  But… numbers do not lie. My Daily Food Diary is proving that given enough time,  and consistent effort,  it is a powerful tool that is helping me to reach my health and fitness goals. 😊

Breakfast/Lunch

Daily Food Diary – Day 116 of 365

It is Day 116 of my Daily Food Diary! 🤗

Today, we are enjoying more beautiful spring weather.   We just finished our Sunday morning brunch and we are relaxing for a few minutes before we head out for a walk with Molly.

Our walks are getting longer and easier all the time.  I am moving easier, faster, and for the most part – far more confidently.

Confidence can be touch and go when walking Molly dog.   One minute we are  striding along just fine, the next we can be lunging at a ‘free range’ cat or a dead squirrel.  😳

Lately, we have had a couple of granddaughter encounters,  while out walking.  Genie deliberately came out to meet us one day and on Friday we just happened to run   into  Maddy.  It is always nice to see any of the girls, but it is over the top exciting when Molly sees them.  Being on the receiving end of her leash in the midst of such excitement is an experience.

Here is to hoping our walk today will be relatively uneventful.   🤗

Daily Food Diary – Day 115 of 365

This is Day 115 of my 365 day Food Diary.  Now that we are moving into barbecue season, we will see  significant changes in our diet.

Our barbecue is ready to go but it will be a couple of weeks before we can pressure wash the patio, put the cover and curtains on the gazebo, and set out the patio furniture.

With the change in weather, it is already meaning a lot more time outside enjoying the fresh air.  Taking walks with Molly is also so much easier now that we do not have to bundle up in winter coats, boots, gloves etc and drive across the city to snow free paths.

Life is getting way more active and healthier!

Speaking of health, I did recover from my meal of restaurant served lasagna.   After our granddaughter Genie read my blog yesterday, she texted me to tell me the problem was the meat sauce.   Since she realized that yeast is an issue for her as well, she has been checking out the ingredients that they use in the kitchen of the restaurant where she works.  The tomato meat sauce they use does include yeast.

I researched it further and found that tomato meat sauce can include nutritional or autolyzed yeast.  I’m not sure I understand what nutritional or autolyzed yeast is, but I definitely know that I need to avoid it!

Since my yeast free existence has become a multi- generational effort (food allergies are genetic 🙄), it has become easier to recognize and avoid the yeast that shows up in unexpected places and to find products that are yeast free.  Daughter Jen (Genie’s mother)  called yesterday to give me a head’s up to try Jordan’s yeast free granola cereal.    It is relatively high in sugar, but it  will make a good snack (in moderation) or a healthier ice cream topping. ☺️

Daily Food Diary – Day 104 of 365

It is  104 days since I started my Daily Food Diary.   🎊   These days are going by a lot quicker than I thought they would, but every day that I  maintain my posting streak, I get a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. 😁

It is easy to maintain any practice once it becomes a habit – especially one that is tucked neatly between other established habits.

I try to have a relatively flexible routine in retirement, but my morning begins with   a set pattern – one that is easy to build on.   Dan and I get up, let Molly out and get her breakfast, let her in, and get our coffee.  I sit down at the computer desk to take my inhalers and vitamins,  and to read our local online newspaper, while Dan turns on the tv to watch the morning news.

This morning as I was flipping past the pages of provincial news and Canadian election news, I was half listening to the American news that Dan was watching.   It occurred to me to wonder if the entire world was obsessed with politics.

Then I began to wonder if anyone reading my blog, thinks I am obsessed with my diet and my chronic lung issues – my asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis, and apparently bronchiolitis that recently showed up on a CT scan.

For the record, I am not.  My Daily Food Diary is something I am  doing  to  help me to  manage my lung issues.  I also do aerobics, regular lung clearing and deep breathing exercises, clear my sinuses with a Neti Pot, get outside and walk, meditate, and   get adequate sleep.

That might seem a bit much – but it really is not THAT much, especially since doing these things gives me the ability to forget about my lung issues and live a normal healthy life for the rest of the day.

That is what I am really obsessed about – my life.   Spending time with Dan,  and with Jen and her girls when they stop by for random visits.  Spending time with Molly – brushing her, feeding her, cleaning up after her. Spending time in our yard, cleaning away the winter debris and preparing for spring planting.

Spending time with my little seedlings – the tomatoes and some of the flowers are going hard.  The peppers and herbs are dawdling,  as usual.

Spending time chatting with friends and family and catching up on social media.  Spending time cooking, cleaning, doing laundry and generally nurturing our little home.  Spending time reading, paying bills, and managing our finances.

All in all, I have a good life.  Making the most of it by taking care of my health is not an obsession – it is just time and effort   well spent. 🤗

My life, my world… 🌞

Daily Food Diary – Day 102 of 365

It is 102 Days since I started my Daily Food Diary in an effort to become more mindful of what I consume.   It is also Three Years & Two Months since I started this Health & Fitness Lifestyle that I have adopted.

Over the past few years, I have joined different Facebook Groups.   Shortly after I started working out, I joined one that is for those who follow David Goggins.  For me, his work pushes me past my comfort zone and challenges me to continually expand my potential.  In three years, I have come much further than  I would have imagined possible.  For a lot of the other members, their goal seems to be about proving the superiority of their political views.  🙄

When, I broke my arm a couple of years ago, I joined a ‘fractured humerus’ group.  I know everyone is different, as is every injury.  But I was amazed that within nine weeks, I was fully healed, while the majority of members were still confined to a recliner 24/7.  I had to wonder if they would ever heal,  if they never moved.  It seemed to me that my level of  activity had given me an edge. 💪

Lately, I joined a group for people with bronchiectasis.   I have struggled to find information on this condition – even from health professionals.  Most ‘chronic lung disease’ research seems to be aimed at COPD.   Many of the new members in this group seem to find likewise.  They join  asking for tips on what they can or should be doing.   Other members offer advice on what tests they should request,  which medications are most effective, and which lung clearing devices to purchase.  I find it bizarre that they do not  mention exercise, diet, or stress control – all of which are far more important than anything for me. 🚶🍎 🧘

I have gotten some valuable information  from the different groups that I have joined, but I struggle to stay engaged.  It seems that for the most part, I am on my own specific path for this Health and Fitness Journey.  As long as it is working for me,  I guess it doesn’t matter, but it seems odd  – because what I am doing does work for me. 😊

Daily Food Diary – Day 99 of 365

Day 99 of my Daily Food Diary and I am still here!  For those who have been checking in on a regular basis, I am happy that you are here and I do appreciate your ongoing support and encouragement. 💞

Our weather continues to improve, our snow and ice continue to melt, and our yard, sidewalks, and parks have deteriorated into mud.

Before we got Molly, I read a LOT about having a Pyrenees.  It wasn’t all flattering, but I was impressed that they have ‘self cleaning’ fur.  That was a big selling point for me.  I was so impressed, I missed the part that explained that these massive, hairy, white dogs will walk, roll, and plow through every bit of mud and crud that they can find and then ‘self clean’ by coming in the house and rubbing themselves against every piece of furniture and fabric that they can reach.  (Molly can reach anything she wants to rub against, around, or over. 😳)

Fortunately, Dan went out and bought Molly a new brush yesterday.  This thing is magical.  I brushed her for half an hour last night and I was amazed.  Not only did it remove mud, tree branches, dead grass  and the like, but it removed a waste basket full of fine undercoat – and did it without filling the air, house, my clothes etc. with those fine little hairs that are generally impossible to control.

Molly’s magical new brush. 😁
There is still some work to do but she is looking pretty presentable 👍

Daily Food Diary – Day 92 of 365 Days

It has been 92 Days since I began tracking and posting my Daily Food Diary.

This Food Diary, which I use as a tool to become more mindful of what I consume, began on January 1st. The date was more of a coincidence than anything.   This was not an  impulse New Years Resolution type of thing.   My  motivation began months earlier.

While I had never been particularly mindful of what I consumed in the past, I always thought that I had a fairly healthy, basic diet. Until…

Three years ago, I realized that consuming anything made with yeast was a major issue, causing severe digestive issues.  Dealing with that, made me take a better look at everything that I was eating.  Until…

Last summer, I experienced ‘sugar creep’ in a big way.  While I was blissfully unaware, I was adding more and more processed sugar to my diet.  It was a vicious cycle of  sugar highs, followed by lows, and back to the pantry for another sugar high. Until…

All of my digestive issues started coming back and my chronic lung issues flared up.  I finally looked at my diet – and there it was – mounds of processed sugar.  Cereals, deserts, toffee, candy covered nuts, store bought muffins, ice cream, soda….

By late September, I was enough of a wreck that I was ready to make a serious effort  to become  mindful of what I consumed on a daily basis and to make whatever adjustments  were needed.

Ultimately, I decided that I would begin a Daily Food Diary on January 1st and finally that I would post it here, on my little blog, to help keep me accountable and committed for a  full year (by which time, mindful  eating will hopefully be a natural part of my health and wellness lifestyle) .  So, here I am at Day 92 and moving forward.

Daily Food Diary – Day 90 of 365

It’s been 90 days – THREE FULL MONTHS since I started my Daily Food Diary and began posting it on here.🎊

In March, I have been tracking and noting my protein consumption.  I am surprised that I not only meet, but often surpass, the daily recommended amount of protein.  From what I have read, too much protein can cause digestive issues.  Since I seldom have digestive issues since I quit eating yeast, I am not really concerned.  I think that between my lung issues and my genetic collagen issues, chances are I just use/need more protein in my diet.  If an issue ever shows up on my routine blood work, I may have to revisit that thought.

Last night we rounded off the month with a meal to a local Buffet Palace.  It is hardly fine dining, but good, basic food – and one restaurant where I can avoid yeast quite easily.

Small desert dish fyi…But Very Good

Today starts a new month and a new focus.  For April I am going to track my SALT and SUGAR consumption.  This one’s going to hurt.  I love both and I know neither are good for anyone – especially anyone with multiple lung conditions that cause mucus issues. 😢
