Daily Food Diary – Day 131 of 365

It is 131 Days since I started posting my Daily Food Diary. πŸŽ‰

My Mother’s Day yesterday was very nice! I spent the day with Dan and Molly, soaking in more heat than we were prepared for!

Dan drove Maddy to work and came home to make me a perfect cheese omelet and bacon breakfast.  He made one stop on the way to buy me a beautiful bouquet of orange roses.

I heard from Jennifer (who was working), Genie & her fiance Alec (who was working, but took time to message all the mothers in his life – 😊), and son Dan called when he got home from work last night.  I didn’t hear from son Mark, (nor expected to) but I did have him, his fiance and his boys in mind.πŸ’ž

My one big food treat for the day was a little wee chocolate Rolo ice cream cone.  I was up at 4:00 this morning.   I’ll say it was worth it.

Dan made delicious ham salad wraps for supper last night. Neither of us were feeling a hot heavy meal. If it cools off a bit this week, I’m sure we will share a steak one night. πŸ™‚

Today is all about Molly.  I’m going to do what I can with a brush this morning and we will take her to PetSmart for a nice bath.

Total saturated fats: 33.1 grams

Saturated fats goal: 13.75 grams πŸ‘Ž

My stats for the past week show my saturated fats averaged 22 grams per day, which isn’t good, but my sodium was only 1765 mg per day, which I am really happy with. And my processed sugar was 19.58 grams which isn’t bad – but something that I still have to work on. (At 32 grams of sugar and 11 grams of saturated fats, that Rolo ice cream cone did some damage even to my weekly stats. πŸ™‚)

That’s it for today.  Take care and have a great day! πŸ’–πŸ˜Š

Daily Food Diary – Day 128 of 365

It has been 128 days since I started my Daily Food Diary.   In 128 days, I have missed zero daily entries,  or posts on Jetpack (WordPress). πŸ’ƒ

People do not succeed in reaching goals, or in life, by hiding behind excuses.  That is one of life’s basic truths.

That being said, yesterday’s diet goals were a complete miss.  While excuses cannot turn my results into a win, I do have a few to share. πŸ™‚

* Starting my morning with a medical appointment – a less than stellar one that resulted in three prescriptions (one that may be a permanent addition to my daily routine), a requisition for a chest x-ray and an appointment for a check up in two weeks.  βš•οΈ

* Having taken my first dose of the antibiotic I received, I was hit by some bizarre side effects.  I felt like I had been punched between my eyes and felt dizzy. πŸ₯΄

* Since I felt rather off, I passed on my daily aerobics and walk.  That meant I had zero calories to subtract from the calories that I consumed.  πŸ˜’

* We took Molly to the vet for a tic treatment and to get one of her ears checked out.Β  While there the vet did her upcoming annual checkup, identified a fungal ear infection and prescribed medication, and provided her with a tic prevention as well as one for worms.Β  Molly came away with a clean bill of health and kudos for being such a big, beautiful, happy, friendly, calm girl.Β  I came away with a $442.00 bill.Β πŸ™„

* And finally, we got home and I received the sundress I had ordered. Size Small. AND.. It fits perfectly! πŸ’ƒ πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰

So there you have it, a few hits, a celebration, and a miss on my daily diet goals.  I am not terribly upset.  I, am delusional enough to  think days like this help  to keep my body from going into starvation mode. (That will never happen. πŸ˜‚)

Daily Food Diary – Day 121 of 365

It is Day 121 of my 375 Day Food Diary! 🎊

Yesterday was the first day of May.Β Β  This month, I am going to focus on the saturated fat in the foods I consume each day.Β Β  I will share this info every day on my blog.Β  I will still beΒ  monitoring my sodium and processed sugar consumption, but I won’t be sharing that on here each day – just to keep the focus on saturated fats.

A few number related notes for today..

  • I now weigh 125 pounds (at 5′ -1″ tall). That is down 35 poundsΒ  from 160 pounds that I was at three years ago.Β  It is 8 pounds down from the 133 pounds that I weighed when I started my Daily Food Diary on January 1st.
  • In April, it became obvious that there were two things that I was consuming that were detrimental to my respiratory health –Β  processed sugar and carbonated water.Β  I have cut back on both A LOT.Β  I have also been walking further, faster, and more frequently which is beneficial to my respiratory health.Β Β Β  Pre – April, my blood oxygen would run 86 to 95 %.Β  This past week it has been 92 to 99%Β Β Β Β Β  * Fun fact – % blood oxygen refers to the percent of red blood cells that contain oxygen Β
  • Since starting my Daily Food Diary, I have stopped the mindless snacking, between meals and dedicated tea time.Β Β Β  Cutting back on processed sugar in April has had a huge effect on my appetite at mealtime.Β  Last night, I had 2 chicken drumsticks and 1/2 package of ramen noodles for supper.Β  A couple of months ago, I would haveΒ  eaten 3 or 4 drumsticks and a full package of ramenΒ  noodles.
  • Getting back to saturated fats… My goal for each day is to stay under 13.75 grams of saturated fats.Β  That is 10% of my total goal of 1247 calories which isΒ  124.7.Β  (2000 cal x 10% = 200 = 22 grams of saturated fat)Β  Mathing it out, that makes my goal 13.75 grams per day.Β Β Β Β Β

Maintaining, posting, or reading a Daily Food Diary may not seem terribly excitingΒ  or effective,Β  on a day to day basis.Β  But… numbers do not lie. My Daily Food Diary is proving that given enough time,  and consistent effort,  it is a powerful tool that is helping me to reach my health and fitness goals. 😊

Daily Food Diary – Day 118 of 365

It is Day 118 of my Daily Food Diary. ☺️ This month I have been tracking the calories, processed sugar, and the sodium that I consume every day.

I still have work to do on my processed sugar and sodium consumption. However, I have learned which foods I need to avoid or eliminate from my diet.Β  And.. I have made a couple of positive changes this month.Β  I have switched from salted nuts to unsalted peanuts and I have started eating Lightly Salted chips – at least sometimes.

For May,Β  I will switch things up and track saturated fat.Β  That should be interesting, since I will still be counting calories and avoiding sodium and processed sugar.Β  And of course, I always avoid yeast! This is getting to be a juggling act.  It is getting difficult to consume enough calories each day, when I am avoiding everything that contains calories!

Yesterday, was election day in Canada.Β  I am glad that is finally behind us!

I am super happy with how our trip to our voting station went yesterday.Β  It was only about one kilometer from here so we decided to take Molly and walk over there. (We took turns going in to vote and staying outside with Molly).Β Β  Anyway… We got halfway there and realized we had forgotten πŸ’©bags for Molly.Β  That is never a safe gamble to take.Β  I power walked home and back to where Dan and Molly were waiting for me.

The exciting part… That extra kilometer, made in record time, did not bother me  at all! I did not struggle to breathe, and there was no muscle or joint discomfort.Β  My blood oxygen was 98% last night.Β Β  And, even this morning, I am fine.Β  That is what makes this all worth while!

While I was in the polling station, I ran into someone I actually know – and really like. And… Since our polling station was at a high school we saw a lot of teenagers.  They were all friendly, polite, and happy to see Molly.  A couple of them even came over and visited with me and Molly –  the entire time that Dan was inside.   They were both  charming and they kept Molly totally distracted! (A good thing because she usually gets rather stressed when Dan has to leave us on our own when we are out and about).

Daily Food Diary – Day 113 of 365

It is 113 Days since I began posting my Daily Food Diary.

We are starting this day off with warm temps,  sunshine,  and  NO wind!  Yay for April in Saskatchewan.  This will be a great day for a walk with Dan and Molly!

Molly checked out the channel on our walk yesterday. It will be more picturesque once our grass starts turning green.

There wasn’t much happening around here yesterday but there are always noteworthy moments.

Yesterday, when we went for our walk Dan ran into our pharmacy to pick up a couple of prescriptions for me.Β  It was just my regular inhalers.Β  Total price $245.00 CDN.Β  Total cost to us? $52.00 CDN.Β Β  Yay for the Saskatchewan Seniors Drug Plan!Β

Also yesterday… was Dan’s dart night.Β  Dart night means a quick and early supper.Β  As I was cooking it last night, our granddaughter Maddy called to ask if we could give her a ride home from her friend’s.Β  It would be within walking distance – less than 4 miles.Β  She has biked it for sure and those girls are pretty independent.Β Β  She could have waited a few minutes and I would have gone for her.Β  But nope..Β  not on Grandpa’s watch.Β  Dan went to pick her up, no questions asked.Β  That is what Grandpa does and as much as the girls appreciate it, I do as well.Β  Every time!

Grandpa’s Girls

And finally yesterday… Dan went to his dart night and I was left with Molly and a serious case of the munchies.Β  I did have a few tortilla chips with salsa, but seriously I wanted something more, preferably something sweet.Β  I went through the pantry, thought about posting another loss on my Daily Food Diary blog – or worse yet ‘forgetting to post’ my unhealthy choice. I considered what a few grams of processed sugar would do to my lungs.Β  Ultimately.. I had a glass of water and called it a night! That was a win.

* For the record.. I have never ‘forgotten‘ to post a poor food choice – deliberately or otherwise.Β Β  I wouldn’t waste your time or mine posting a fake win.Β

Daily Food Diary – Day 103 of 365

It has been 103 days since I started tracking my ‘numbers’ on  my Daily Food Diary.  When I started this adventure, I did not have any solid goals or expectations, but I have found it to be educational and beneficial.

I began the year at 133.5 pounds with an  ultimate goal of reaching 115 pounds.  I am 5′ – 1″ with a smaller frame.   115 pounds is pretty much perfect for me – and where I can fit into my  favourite jeans.

I have been doing ok working towards my weight  goal, but I have been struggling to get under 128 pounds.   Yesterday, I weighed in at 126.4 pounds!  😁

This month, I have been tracking and struggling to get my sodium and processed sugar consumption under control.Β  On day 100, my sugar maxed out at 58.1 grams. (I am trying to keep it under 25 grams.) Β  My last three days have been – 2.5 g, 5.6 g, and 9.9 g.Β  I was happy about that, but what I was really happy about was the numbers on my Oximeter last night.Β  My pulse registered at 70 BPM and my blood oxygen was up to 99%.Β Β  (Typically 90 to 92%). My lungs were noticeably, and thankfully,Β  clear.Β

Yesterday, my processed sugar crept up a bit.  Today my lungs are somewhat more congested and  my weight is up 4 ounces. πŸ™„

I am definitely motivated to make more of an effort to avoid PROCESSED SUGAR.  I believe everyone should avoid processed sugar as much as possible.    For me,  I think it is worse due to my compromised lungs and my intolerance for yeast.  Sugar feeds yeast so there is definitely a connection.

I do know it is well worth continuing my focus on processed sugar  for the remainder of this month.

Daily Food Diary – Day 91 of 365

It is 91 Days since I began my Daily Food Diary.Β  That is a full 13 weeks!Β πŸ™Œ  As I had hoped, I have become more mindful of what I consume on a daily basis and I have made a few adjustments along the way.

This month, I have decided to become more mindful of my sodium (a major component in table salt, MSG, and baking soda) and processed sugar consumption.

Processed sugar and excessive sodium consumption is not (typically) good for anyone.Β Β Β  For someone like me, with multiple chronic lung conditions,Β  too much of either is particularly bad.

A major issue with lung conditions, such as asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis, or bronchiolitis is MUCUS – the quantity of it and the viscosity of it.Β  Diet affects both.

Some foods, like dairy products, increase the production of mucus.Β  Other components of our diet dehydrate and thicken saidΒ  mucus.   Such mucus dehydrating items include caffeine, alcohol, carbonated drinks, sodium, and sugar.Β Β  Drinking an adequate amount of water helps to counter these issues but only to a point.

Fortunately, caffeine, alcohol, and carbonated drinks have never been an issue for me.Β  I enjoy my carbonated water – but I can live without it.Β  SodiumΒ andΒ  processed sugar areΒ  more of a challenge.Β Β  Thus my April focus.

Yesterday, I kicked the month off with one of our fairly frequent,  favourite suppers – just to see what I am starting with. The sugar content wasn’t bad – the sodium was off the charts. πŸ™„

I did search out a healthier snack to go with my afternoon tea.Β  I can see switching  these crackers for my all too typical potato chips.

Kirkland Crackers from Costco
The chips in our pantry range from 240 to 360 mg of sodium per serving. (And +/- 260 calories)

Daily Food Diary – Day 89

It has been 89 Days since I started my Daily Food Diary.Β  Some days look better than others.Β

This one missed the mark. I went over on calories and I went under on protein.Β  But, if I average the calories and the protein for the past week, it does average out.Β  And if I take a panoramic view of how I am doing lately, I am not disappointed.

I have been working at improving my water intake.Β  I was drifting back to my pre diary days for a while, so have been working on a correction there.Β  I have also been foregoing the carbonated water for regular filtered water.Β Β  I read lately that carbonated water is not recommended for people like me, with lung issues. We will see if this helps.

With the cold wind finally dying down, Dan and Molly, and I went walking yesterday.Β  We stayed in our neighbourhood, traveling down sidewalks that areΒ still covered with ice ruts, snow, and water.Β Β  It doesn’t relate well to what I can claim for calories burnt but it is walking, at a slow pace, all stumbling and sliding aside.Β  One doesn’t get credit for staying upright for the duration – or for the fresh air that helps my lungs.

I have been sleeping well, using my soft headphones to listen to sleep meditations when I go to bed at night.Β

And I have been making progress with my stress and anxiety management, which is huge for controlling my asthma, COPD, and bronchiectasis.

Overall, my life is pretty good, and I am doing a pretty solid job of managing my health and wellness.Β  Candy coated Easter eggs aside… And spoiler alert, if you thought that matrimonial cake went on forever, don’t hold your breath waiting for me to polish off my JUMBO bag of Easter Eggs. πŸ™„

Daily Food Diary – Day 85 of 365

It is 85 days since I began keeping and posting my Daily Food Diary.  My intention was to track everything I consume in a day, become more mindful of what I consume, and gradually make some improvements as  to what I consume.

So far I believe I am getting as much out of the exercise as I thought I would.  I am also getting more support and encouragement from my regular followers than I expected.  For this, I am so grateful! πŸ€—

Reading what I consume every day can’t be that exciting for anyone.  For me, the real magic happens when I decide what not to eat or bake or buy, knowing that I am going to have to write it in my diary and post it for any and all to see.

This week I decided to work harder to meet my daily calorie goal of 1269 calories a day. On Monday, I posted that would be my focus for this week and so far so good.Β  Monday and Tuesday, I was substantially under my goal.

Last night was Dan’s dart night.  We eat early on dart night, so we decided to make supper easy by indulging in some take out.  That used up most of my calories for the day. 🀦

After Dan left, I had 88 calories left to fill my “600 Pound Life” and “911” marathon evening – my biggest snack event of the week, which I often fill by sharing a bag of popcorn with Molly.Β  Last night, determined to stay on track, I indulged in RAW BROCCOLI drizzled with salad dressing.Β Β Β

Raw broccoli will never replace hot buttery popcorn, but last night it was broccoli for the win and I stayed under my calorie goal for the day – just barely.   How exciting is that? πŸ‘

Daily Food Diary – Day 80 of 365

I am 80 days into my 365 day Daily Food Diary.  There’s only 285 more days to go before I will have to find something else to do first thing every morning.  With my hernia repair hopefully behind me, I am considering upping my daily activity by starting a 365 day Daily Workout Diary. πŸ’ͺ

Right now,  I am maintaining my morning aerobics.  I have been doing You Tube aerobic workouts for over two years now.  While the results have been subtle, they have been there.  I have lost +30 pounds, toned up my body, improved my lung function and  increased my stamina.  I have also  noticed a major improvement in my flexibility and balance – two things that are of major importance as I will soon be in my seventies.  Being able to move forward easily and confidently, is a huge win!

Dan, Molly, and I have also been out doing more walking, with the official arrival of spring this week.  I love walking and  spending dedicated time with Dan and Molly.

I am looking forward to getting back to more strength training, once my repair is done.  Working with weights – even light weights is important to maintaining muscle and bones.

I am still looking atΒ  moving outside of my comfort zone and trying some of theΒ  professional workout facilities around the city.Β Β  We have a variety of gyms, indoor tracks, climbing walls, trampoline parks… and more.Β  A Daily Workout Diary – especially one that I posted on here – would definitely give me the incentive to get out and do it.Β Β  Hmmm…
