Daily Food Diary – Day 336 of 365

Today is Day 336 of my Daily Food Diary! 💥

I am three days into my Food Diary recap.  As I have mentioned regularly, this challenge was never about losing weight, however in February I decided to up my effort by counting calories.  This led to 3 distinct wins!

1) I did lose  a total of 12 pounds in 2025

2) Terry from http://radicallyretired.com, a friend that I have made here on Jetpack introduced me to Lose It! an app that has been very educational and extremely helpful in maintaining my Daily Food Diary.

3) Counting calories was far more interesting and educational that I thought it would be.

I thought I had a pretty good handle on portion control (I didn’t). I was comparing the portions I ate versus those that others ate – like my 220 lb husband, who until recently worked 13 hour, 24/7 shifts in a steel pipe plant.  🤦‍♀️

I also thought I had foods figured out calorie wise..

Salad was good… until I put salad dressing, sesame seeds, or cheese on it.

Nuts are good for you – until you look at the calories in them! (Salt and saturated fats add to the mayhem)

Sugar has tons of calories..not really, but sugar seriously ramps up my appetite so leads to a revolving door of calories

Chicken is low in calories – unless like me you like the dark meat skin on. That is where they hide the calories but that is also where the collagen is – so I have to balance that one.

Anyway, counting calories takes time but I would definitely recommend it, especially if one is trying to lose weight.

I am super late posting today.  I didn’t forget to post, we were just out and about so I did not have time to post …walking Molly, running errands, doing a bit of shopping, having lunch at The Canadian Brewpub – which was win Number 1 today.  Neither of us had brew but Dan’s chicken wings looked delicious and my taco salad was amazing.

Paying our annual house insurance was painful, but I did score a new fridge calendar for win Number 2.

Daily Food Diary – Day 261 of 365 Days

Today it is 261 Days since I started posting my Daily Food Diary. 💓

Today it is also my sister Elaine’s BIRTHDAY!

Happy Birthday Elaine! 🎈

Speaking of birthday cake… I love cake, I love icing, and I especially love the icing on commercially made cakes. 👍

Unfortunately, I (as well as my daughter and her daughters) cannot eat yeast and commercially baked anything these days is made with powdered egg whites – which are made with yeast

That is just one of the allergy/ intolerances discoveries that I have made recently.

A few weeks ago, I ate something that should have been perfectly fine.  I immediately got seriously bloated and started experiencing violent abdominal cramps.  🙄

I checked the ingredients and the only thing that was slightly questionable was that the product contained palm oil.  I decided to keep that in mind.

A couple of days later, daughter Jen messaged  me that she was violently ill.  She sent me the nutritional label/ingredient list for what she had just eaten…and it noted  palm oil.

I have been fine since, but Jen has been checking anything she eats for palm oil (she has several severe food allergies so she is generally extra careful).

She has not been feeling well for some time and been experiencing allergy type issues – but she couldn’t pinpoint the issue.

This morning she messaged me that she happened to notice that the margarine that she has been using for cooking and baking has palm oil in it now.

No doubt, palm oil is becoming as ubiquitous as yeast!

That is the issue I have with a number of professionals – business administrators, doctors, investment counsellors, chefs apparently… They find one thing that works and that becomes the norm for the entire industry  – until it turns out that the norm doesn’t work all that well. (At least for some  of their customers) 🤦

In the meantime  buyer beware, be mindful, be alert…

Daily Food Diary –  Day 185 of 365

This is Day 185 of posting  my Daily Food Diary (without one miss). 🤗💪

This month, I am focussing on collagen in our diet and in our lifestyle.

A healthy diet, adequate exercise, and collagen supplements can help us to keep our collagen levels up even as we age.   Unfortunately, stress produces cortisol which slows down collagen production and weakens the collagen in our bodies.

So, stress management becomes an important part of increasing and maintaining our collagen levels.

For Dan and I, going out and walking our dog Molly is an important part of our stress management.   Last night, Dan decided we should switch things up by getting up at 6 AM this morning and heading straight out for a walk in the country.  (Go Dan! 💞) What could be a better (de-stressing) way to start our day!   Walking together with Molly, in the fresh air, surrounded by the beauty of nature  as far as the eye could see just sounded too perfect!

We were up at 5:50 A.M. – no coffee, breakfast, no vitamins or inhalers.  We got up, got dressed, and got ready to head out.

Molly was beside herself with excitement!
After driving MANY miles (on gravel roads that somehow devolved into whatever this was),  we found the exact location we were looking for.   WE HAVE ARRIVED!
This looked like a promising spot to head out for our little hike.
A picturesque little pool of water that turned out to be the breeding ground for countless  bloodsucking insects that were intent on crawling into my eyes and ears. 😝
We soldiered on checking out the thick foliage, finding a few flat rocks for our pond, and discovering a stretch of gorgeous pink, wild roses.   Pink roses have always had a special significance for Dan and I.

I failed to get pictures of the wild roses.  By this point I had packed away my phone so I could use both hands to fight off those vicious little bastards from the watering hole.

And, we decided it was time to abruptly  head  home when a friendly young man pulled up in his halfton to advise us that his rifle club,  gathering along the valley,  were preparing to start shooting in our direction.  😳😯🤷

Fortunately, it was a short drive home.  And fortunately there is nothing more relaxing and good for dropping cortisol levels and maintaining collagen levels than returning home.  👍

Daily Food Diary – Day 183 of 365

Today is Day 183 of my Daily Food Diary.  I am half-way there without missing a single day! 💃

Today  is also granddaughter Gabby’s 20th birthday!

Happy Birthday, Gabby and good luck in your 3rd year of psychology studies.

Gabby truly is an amazing young lady.  Everything she does, from and for,  her education, to dancing, to basketball, to work, to friends, to family and especially to  being the BEST BIG SISTER to Lucas and Cason, she does with enthusiasm, love, determination, and her quirky goofy sense of humour.

This month my health and wellness focus is collagen.  There are multiple natural foods that contain collagen or aid in the natural production/synthesis of collagen.

I prefer to get the nutrients my body needs from the foods that I eat.   That being said, I do take Vitamin D daily because A. I live in Saskatchewan and B. It is particularly helpful for respiratory health.  With asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis, and sinus issues, I need all the help I can get.

I also take Vitamin B12 for my blood and Lutein for my eyes.

This morning, a regular visitor to my blog,   Martha  from  https://walkingchestercom.wordpress.com commented that  she has been taking collagen supplements for her knees (joints) and she has experienced wonderful results.  Since this is collagen month – I decided this would be a great time to add them to my wellness routine.  It generally takes six weeks to notice any significant improvement from any change in supplements, exercise program, or diet so I will give it a couple of months to determine if it helps me.

It is going to be a warm day for us today  +33 degrees celsius (91F).   It doesn’t seem like a great day for baking Rhubarb Torte,  but rhubarb is high in vitamin C, which is good for collagen production  and I was up until midnight last night peeling the two grocery bags of rhubarb that granddaughter Maddy dropped off yesterday.  So, baking it is,  today. 🤷

Daily Food Diary – Day 177 of 365

This is Day 177 of my Daily Food Diary! 💃

Yesterday was a pretty good  day for me.  Not food goal wise… But good as days go!

Molly and I took our morning walk alone as Dan was busy getting ready to head out for a round of golf.   We did pretty good on our own, although it is always better when Dan is with us and I know he has our backs  (water, back up collar, poop bags….  👍).  He was particularly missed when Molly and I were walking the grassy path between the railroad tracks and McKinley Street and Molly screeched to a sudden stop to pee.  I didn’t catapult over her, but I was startled.  We had another (long) moment when we were cutting through the ball diamonds to come home and Molly saw friends of hers at the dogpark (across the water channel).  I thought I might be going for a swim, but I  managed to hold onto her collar and drag her until she decided to continue our walk. 🤦

After we got home, I did my aerobic workout and had my lunch before Maddy & Prim called.  They were at the Regent Pool (by the dogpark) and were looking to come for a visit.  It was their first day of summer holidays so I was pretty excited that they chose  to come and spend part of it with  Grandma. 💞

We had a good visit and the girls had toasted bacon and tomato sandwiches.   When the grandkids come over they often talk about visits and sleepovers that we had when they were younger.  They each have their own favourite memories.   The other day,  Prim told me that she mostly remembers the food we shared.

Just as they were talking about heading home, our afternoon thunder storm hit.   They don’t live far but I drove them home before the worst of it hit.   Had they walked, they would have gotten drenched at the very least.

Maddy & Prim – heading into grades 10 an 8 when school resumes in September.
Maddy & Prim – back in the day, when Maddy was trying to make beautiful memories and Prim was excited about having  lunch. 😂

The plants in and around our yard are still struggling this year (despite the sun, rain, and lightening that we have been getting).  While the plants are small, the blossoms are huge.  🤷

Daily Food Diary – Day 120 of 365

It is 120 days since I started my Daily Food Diary.

Looking at the results of my calorie counting and sodium and processed sugar tracking yesterday, it doesn’t look good for my progress in this exercise.   But, results do not always tell the entire story.

Last night, I was planning a supper that would have had me meet my nutritional goals for the day.  But plans change.

At lunchtime yesterday, Granddaughter Prim texted to ask if she and her sister Maddy could come for supper.   We went from a supper for two to a ham and scalloped potato family meal – and I hit the ham hard.

Prim and Maddy

We always enjoy time spent with any of our grandkids.  Last night,  we had three big wins to celebrate as well!

1) Maddy who has been struggling with her math,  got the results of her latest math test since starting to work with a tutor  (a retired math teacher who Genie introduced her to) … 48 out of 50!  Big win for Maddy!!

2) Prim and I started talking about obesity and restaurant food.  It might seem like a  strange subject for a thirteen year old, but she instigated it.   That led to her checking out nutritional information for one of her favourite restaurants and comparing a Veggie Burger and a Deep Fried Chicken Burger.  The clear winner (nutritionally)  – Deep Fried Chicken Burger had lower calories, sodium, and processed sugar.  We both learned something new – which is always a win.  And it was a big win for Prim because she learned that, especially when it comes to food – better choices are not always that obvious.

3) The girls’ sister Genie dropped by for a short visit and to drive the girls home after supper.

Left, Genie last June.  Right, Genie last night.

Genie has struggled with health issues since she was born – partly genetic, partly due to being born prematurely.   The last couple of years have been particularly difficult for her.  Since giving up yeast and starting to feel so much better,  I have been trying to convince Genie to try that as well.  In the past few months, she decided it was worth trying.  The proof is on her face! Her bloating is gone, she is feeling much better, and she is so much happier.  It wasn’t all about the yeast, but it was a big win for Genie – and one that encouraged her to adopt other positive changes.

It is always good to see the grandkids.  It is even better when we see them learning  how much power they possess – to deal with the challenges that life hands them and to earn the wins that life has to offer .  🌹

Daily Food Diary – Day 116 of 365

It is Day 116 of my Daily Food Diary! 🤗

Today, we are enjoying more beautiful spring weather.   We just finished our Sunday morning brunch and we are relaxing for a few minutes before we head out for a walk with Molly.

Our walks are getting longer and easier all the time.  I am moving easier, faster, and for the most part – far more confidently.

Confidence can be touch and go when walking Molly dog.   One minute we are  striding along just fine, the next we can be lunging at a ‘free range’ cat or a dead squirrel.  😳

Lately, we have had a couple of granddaughter encounters,  while out walking.  Genie deliberately came out to meet us one day and on Friday we just happened to run   into  Maddy.  It is always nice to see any of the girls, but it is over the top exciting when Molly sees them.  Being on the receiving end of her leash in the midst of such excitement is an experience.

Here is to hoping our walk today will be relatively uneventful.   🤗

Daily Food Diary – Day 114 of 365

It has been 114 Days since I began posting my Daily Food Diary! 🎊

I started this process to get a better handle on what, and how much, I have been consuming each day.

For the past month I have been tracking my processed sugar, sodium, and net calorie intake.

A few notes on this…

(1) My Total Net Calories is based on calories consumed minus calories burned by exercise.  I haven’t been posting my daily exercise here since it is generally morning aerobics and afternoon walking (weather permitting).

(2) Yesterday, for the first time in months, I missed my six morning a week aerobics, but  I did walk – a lot!

(3) Due to a yeast allergy, I avoid consuming  anything containing yeast.  I also avoid consuming processed sugar for health reasons.   I generally eat foods that I make  from scratch.  This helps me to avoid yeast and processed sugar.  👍

(4)  Yesterday, having spent a good part of the day walking  (a lengthy and irrelevant story), I decided we deserved supper out.  (my second mistake of the day).   We went to a local restaurant that has always been a favourite.  We went early, so I had visions of an evening snack.   Totally out of character, I ordered lasagna.  (THIRD and worst mistake of the day).  The lasagna looked, smelled, and tasted amazing! I ate every bite.   We returned home and it became obvious that the lasagna had been a bad idea.  The intestinal distress hit hard and fast.  I can’t imagine why lasagna would be filled with yeast and sugar (and sodium 🙄) but my body did not appreciate it.  By the time, I felt human again, the last thing I wanted was an evening snack.   I finished the day  260 net calories under my goal.

So there you have it.  Today is a new day and a new start to reaching my diet goals.  A diet where lasagna, and probably any restaurant meal,  will not be found any time soon. 🤦

Daily Food Diary – Day Day 114

(48) oz water

(1) peach (58)

(6) strawberries (23) (.7 mg)

Supper:

Daily Food Diary – Day 107 of 365

It has been 107 Days since I started tracking and posting my Daily Food Diary.  I have learned a lot about my consumption habits and have made a few necessary changes. 🙂

This month my focus has been on processed sugar and sodium.

Becoming aware of where to find processed sugar in the foods that I eat, has helped me to eliminate the bulk of it.

Some things, like the matrimonial squares and candy coated Easter eggs, were obviously an issue.    Things like premade pie crust or back bacon have been  more surprising.  It is only one gram here, one gram there… but it adds up,  if you are unaware of it.

The thing with processed sugar, beyond the many unhealthy things it does to our bodies,  are the things it does to our relationship with food as a whole.  While sugar ramps up our energy in the short term, our appetite comes back with a vengeance and particularly our craving  for MORE processed sugar.

I have known forever how processed sugar affects my daily diet.   Since keeping this daily diary, it has been interesting to see how MUCH processed sugar affects my daily diet.  This is particularly true if I start my day with sugar packed cereals, store bought muffins  or breakfast bars, pancakes or  waffles with syrup, or the like.   That opens my entire day to bad food choices.

Since starting my Daily Food Diary, I have been relatively shocked by how much sodium I ingest.  I knew there was a LOT of sodium in things like potato chips, condiments,  oriental sauces, canned gravy, bacon, ham, and more.  There have been surprises –  like the high sodium content in Paratha and back bacon!

I am gradually making changes to how I manage my sodium intake.  Cooked vegetables get (salted butter) and pepper – no added salt.  Eggs, raw vegetables, soups or stews, etc.  get a pinch of salt that I can control – NOT straight out of the shaker or grinder hits that I cannot.   Pan frying is done with olive oil rather than buttered salt.   My husband, who does our shopping, has been bringing home  low sodium or lightly salted options. It all helps!

With sodium it is a process, but one that is progressing with the help of my Daily Food Diary.    The changes I have made are  slight and gradual – but that will help me to make them sustainable in the long run. 😊

Daily Food Diary – Day 94 of 365

It is 94 days since I started keeping my Daily Food Diary and making a serious effort to become a mindful eater.

This month, I am working on tracking and reducing my salt and processed sugar consumption – while still tracking my overall calories.   Yesterday, I hit the trifecta reaching all three goals that I was aiming for.  Yay me!

Our weather is improving which is definitely going to help me reach some non food goals – especially the fresh air and exercise.  Yesterday, Dan, Molly, and  I took our longest walk  this year. We stayed in our neighborhood.  It isn’t the nice smooth paths that we have in our park walks, and the scenery is lacking.  There is traffic, streets to cross, and more people – so it is good for getting Molly acclimatized to more and different distractions.

Molly is getting better on our walks.  I have been taking her leash more and more often – and for longer periods.  Yesterday she did great.  We had one busy street to cross, so I made her sit for a break in the traffic.  She sat like a champ for a good two to three minutes! (We were at a crosswalk but back from the street as we didn’t want to disrupt the flow of traffic).

Molly did have one moment yesterday.  I was distracted by the uneven sidewalk (ie trying not to trip and faceplant). Molly saw two teenagers sitting at a bus stop with their backs towards us.  Molly, stopped suddenly stuck her head in the bus shelter  and booped one of the young guys with her nose.  No harm done, but the poor guy jumped about a foot off the bench.

“She’s just friendly!” 🤦
