Daily Food Diary – Day 258 of 365

Today is Day 258 of my Daily Food Diary – without a single miss! 🌋

Yesterday, I returned to my typical workout routine.  I had no problem doing a complete aerobics session nor a light weight routine.  I only did fifteen minutes on the treadmill but I was happy with that.  I was planning to step back a bit just because I had not been using the treadmill for long before I was sidelined by my latest lung infection.

Yesterday on my blog,  I was discussing the benefits that I have already experienced since I started taking collagen supplements two and half months ago.   One benefit that I failed to mention was my much improved balance and co-ordination.

I am so excited about all of the benefits that I am receiving from these collagen supplements.  I am constantly noticing the difference and thinking “Look what I can do!” . I went for an entire full length walk this morning and I DID NOT stumble once.

Many years ago, many decades ago, I was a bridesmaid in my brother and sister-in-law’s wedding party.   During the rehearsal, I tripped and stumbled so many times that the best man got annoyed and asked me if I was drunk.   Nope… That was just my life before collagen supplements. 🙄

That there has always been something wrong with the way my body produces and/or uses collagen is obvious.  But looking at how people in general live and age, I believe that collagen deficiency is getting and will only get worse until things change.

A couple of nights ago, Dan and I were talking about our fathers.  They were both incredibly strong men – physically and otherwise.    Neither of them ‘worked out’ at a gym or otherwise.  Their strength came from their diet rich in collagen.

I see regular articles about the foods that Boomers (and pre-Boomers) ate – foods considered beneath the sophisticated palate of today’s youth.

Our fathers ate head cheese and pork hocks, stewing hen soups, tougher cuts of beef  – slow cooked in sauce and gravy to break down the cartilage and tendons, gelatin salads and desserts, blood sausage, sardines and more of the like.

It was good flavourful  food without the unhealthy additives that are in our food today and it made people strong.  Strong enough to live strong, healthy,  high quality lives.

My Dad on the Left, Dan’s Dad on the right
Our supper last night.  It was good – the meat was slow cooked, the beets and garden tomato and cucumber were amazing, the mashed potatoes and gravy were perfect.  But the nutritional value fell short of our Dad’s diet.   Unfortunately!

Daily Food Diary – Day 177 of 365

This is Day 177 of my Daily Food Diary! 💃

Yesterday was a pretty good  day for me.  Not food goal wise… But good as days go!

Molly and I took our morning walk alone as Dan was busy getting ready to head out for a round of golf.   We did pretty good on our own, although it is always better when Dan is with us and I know he has our backs  (water, back up collar, poop bags….  👍).  He was particularly missed when Molly and I were walking the grassy path between the railroad tracks and McKinley Street and Molly screeched to a sudden stop to pee.  I didn’t catapult over her, but I was startled.  We had another (long) moment when we were cutting through the ball diamonds to come home and Molly saw friends of hers at the dogpark (across the water channel).  I thought I might be going for a swim, but I  managed to hold onto her collar and drag her until she decided to continue our walk. 🤦

After we got home, I did my aerobic workout and had my lunch before Maddy & Prim called.  They were at the Regent Pool (by the dogpark) and were looking to come for a visit.  It was their first day of summer holidays so I was pretty excited that they chose  to come and spend part of it with  Grandma. 💞

We had a good visit and the girls had toasted bacon and tomato sandwiches.   When the grandkids come over they often talk about visits and sleepovers that we had when they were younger.  They each have their own favourite memories.   The other day,  Prim told me that she mostly remembers the food we shared.

Just as they were talking about heading home, our afternoon thunder storm hit.   They don’t live far but I drove them home before the worst of it hit.   Had they walked, they would have gotten drenched at the very least.

Maddy & Prim – heading into grades 10 an 8 when school resumes in September.
Maddy & Prim – back in the day, when Maddy was trying to make beautiful memories and Prim was excited about having  lunch. 😂

Daily Food Diary – Day 162 of 365

It is 162 Days since I began posting my Daily Food Diary! 😊

We are at son Dan’s for a few days.  Theoretically we are here to help Dan hold down the fort and keep their two sons – Lucas (10) and Cason (6), while Dan’s wife is out of town.   In reality, Dan has some unexpected time off  so  has  a handle on everything.  We  aren’t doing much except enjoying our visit.

Tomorrow, Dan & son Dan are spending the day at a golf tournament so I will get a chance to step up a bit.

I did get my aerobics done yesterday.  We also had enough of a break from the smoke that I  got outside for a bit of  fresh air.   💪

There is plenty of  space (and flowers) to enjoy on the deck that wraps around much of their house. 🤗

Daily Food Diary – Day 148 of 365

It is 148 Days since I began posting my Daily Food Diary.  148 Days without ONE MISS! 🔥🎉🔥

It has been 5 Years since I retired.  At the time, I was in poor health.  I had no idea what I would, or could,  do with my retirement.  AND… I went through an identity crisis of sorts.

I was no longer the work that I did.  My parents were gone, so I wasn’t engaged as a daughter (as I had been).  I wasn’t actively parenting, or even grandparenting (due to COVID and family dynamics at the time).  With Dan working 13 hour shifts, I was on my own A LOT.  And I spent much of the time trying to figure out who, or what,  I was.

Throughout my  life, I have come to know a handful of rare and wonderful people who stood out.  They were people who were always so consistent and solid that I KNEW they NEVER doubted who they were – anytime or anywhere.  But I couldn’t put my finger on why – or what they did differently.  I just knew that I wanted to be one of them. 🤔

Recently, I finally figured it out.  These people who always stood out to me embodied the core values that I had been raised to value.

I was very fortunate growing up because my parents did stress core values that would help me to appreciate and enjoy the good times in my life.  They also stressed the core values that would help me to get through the challenges and the difficult time.

I always knew these core values were important, and I valued them, but somehow I thought they were rules about how to treat others.  If I treated people a certain way, it would keep me out of trouble, it would make them like me, it would make people validate my self worth.  I always wondered if I was being sincere, or if others believed I was sincere, because I was using these values as  bartering tools.

Five years into my retirement  I finally get it.  Core values are not something we have or something we use…. Our core values are who we are.  🤦

*** I need to make a retraction or a clarification to an earlier post where I was talking about my drinking (or non drinking) history.   At one point I said I started drinking more (at least more regularly) once  my husband Dan came into my life.  I did not mean to imply that  Dan  drove me to drink…  We were just at a place where we had the freedom, means, and motivation to socialize more than was ever typical for me – with each other and with his hockey team.. etc.

Dan, holding baby Cason.  Very much the man I married. 💞

Daily food Diary – Day 134 of 365

It is Day 134 of my Daily Food Diary! Only 231 Days to go until I am a nutritional expert. 😄

After no sleep the night before, I did not make any great strides on my Health & Fitness Journey yesterday.

It gets incredibly frustrating to be tripping along and then have a massively rough day, when you wonder if you are going to survive – much less ever get back on track to bigger and better things. 😬

Fortunately, yesterday wasn’t a total write off.  Dan and I took Molly for a short walk.  As we were passing the dogpark, Dan noticed that Molly’s friend Willy and his human Randy, were there so we stopped to visit.  Ripple, and his human Lyndon, showed up and Molly wasn’t going anywhere.

I left Dan and Molly at the park and came home to do my aerobic workout.  When Dan got home, we headed out to go shopping.

I used all of our Canadian Tire points on bedding plants but I scored big – several herbs, peppers, strawberries, pansies, AND portulaca.

We moved on to Walmart and bought a new coffee maker, a few groceries, laundry detergent AND dog treats.  We picked up dental treats (pricey but not as bad as dental surgery!), bedtime cookies, and general snack treats.

When we got Molly we paid $250.00 for her  plus took her straight to the vet’s for a checkup and her vaccines (another $250.00 ?).  In the past week, we took her to the vet ($442.00), bath at Pet store ($20.00 incl tip), got her a new bag of dogfood ($60.00) and got her treats… ($60.00).   And she needs a new collar. 🤦 Molly dogs are not for the faint of heart!

Healthwise I am hopefully back on track today.  I slept like a rock last night – ALL NIGHT.   This is my last day of antibiotics, three more days of Prednisone, and if we get past this solid rainy day with 92% humidity – I think I will be good to go! 💃

Daily Food Diary – Day 134

Breakfast:

(1) coffee (2)

(1) tsp olive oil (40) (.7 grams)

(1) tsp butter (34) (2.3 grams)

Daily Food Diary – Day 131 of 365

It is 131 Days since I started posting my Daily Food Diary. 🎉

My Mother’s Day yesterday was very nice! I spent the day with Dan and Molly, soaking in more heat than we were prepared for!

Dan drove Maddy to work and came home to make me a perfect cheese omelet and bacon breakfast.  He made one stop on the way to buy me a beautiful bouquet of orange roses.

I heard from Jennifer (who was working), Genie & her fiance Alec (who was working, but took time to message all the mothers in his life – 😊), and son Dan called when he got home from work last night.  I didn’t hear from son Mark, (nor expected to) but I did have him, his fiance and his boys in mind.💞

My one big food treat for the day was a little wee chocolate Rolo ice cream cone.  I was up at 4:00 this morning.   I’ll say it was worth it.

Dan made delicious ham salad wraps for supper last night. Neither of us were feeling a hot heavy meal. If it cools off a bit this week, I’m sure we will share a steak one night. 🙂

Today is all about Molly.  I’m going to do what I can with a brush this morning and we will take her to PetSmart for a nice bath.

Daily Food Diary – Day 131

Breakfast:

(1) coffee (2)

(2) egg omelet with cheese (260) (10 grams)

(3) slices bacon (130) (3.3 grams)

(1) tsp olive oil (40) (.7 grams)

(1) tsp butter (34) (2.3 grams)

(1/2 tomato (11)

(2) potato patties (240)

Snacks:

(60) oz water

(1) Rolo ice cream cone (310) (11 grams)

Supper:

(3/4) c Ham salad (235) (4 grams)

(1) cheese tortilla wrap (170) (1.5)

(1) Bick’s Baby Dill Pickle (3)

(6) No Name lightly salted ripple chips (65) (.2 grams)

Total net calories: 1500

Net calorie goal: 1243 – 1500 = 257 over 👎

Total saturated fats: 33.1 grams

Saturated fats goal: 13.75 grams 👎

My stats for the past week show my saturated fats averaged 22 grams per day, which isn’t good, but my sodium was only 1765 mg per day, which I am really happy with. And my processed sugar was 19.58 grams which isn’t bad – but something that I still have to work on. (At 32 grams of sugar and 11 grams of saturated fats, that Rolo ice cream cone did some damage even to my weekly stats. 🙂)

That’s it for today.  Take care and have a great day! 💖😊

Daily Food Diary – Day 120 of 365

It is 120 days since I started my Daily Food Diary.

Looking at the results of my calorie counting and sodium and processed sugar tracking yesterday, it doesn’t look good for my progress in this exercise.   But, results do not always tell the entire story.

Last night, I was planning a supper that would have had me meet my nutritional goals for the day.  But plans change.

At lunchtime yesterday, Granddaughter Prim texted to ask if she and her sister Maddy could come for supper.   We went from a supper for two to a ham and scalloped potato family meal – and I hit the ham hard.

Prim and Maddy

We always enjoy time spent with any of our grandkids.  Last night,  we had three big wins to celebrate as well!

1) Maddy who has been struggling with her math,  got the results of her latest math test since starting to work with a tutor  (a retired math teacher who Genie introduced her to) … 48 out of 50!  Big win for Maddy!!

2) Prim and I started talking about obesity and restaurant food.  It might seem like a  strange subject for a thirteen year old, but she instigated it.   That led to her checking out nutritional information for one of her favourite restaurants and comparing a Veggie Burger and a Deep Fried Chicken Burger.  The clear winner (nutritionally)  – Deep Fried Chicken Burger had lower calories, sodium, and processed sugar.  We both learned something new – which is always a win.  And it was a big win for Prim because she learned that, especially when it comes to food – better choices are not always that obvious.

3) The girls’ sister Genie dropped by for a short visit and to drive the girls home after supper.

Left, Genie last June.  Right, Genie last night.

Genie has struggled with health issues since she was born – partly genetic, partly due to being born prematurely.   The last couple of years have been particularly difficult for her.  Since giving up yeast and starting to feel so much better,  I have been trying to convince Genie to try that as well.  In the past few months, she decided it was worth trying.  The proof is on her face! Her bloating is gone, she is feeling much better, and she is so much happier.  It wasn’t all about the yeast, but it was a big win for Genie – and one that encouraged her to adopt other positive changes.

It is always good to see the grandkids.  It is even better when we see them learning  how much power they possess – to deal with the challenges that life hands them and to earn the wins that life has to offer .  🌹

Daily Food Diary – Day 109 of 365

Today  is Day 109 of my Daily Food Diary.

Today is also Easter Sunday.  Happy Easter to you and yours! I hope you are having a special day.   Our weather is sunny and warm which makes for a special day for us.  Son Dan calling a few minutes ago, made this day even more special!

Today ALSO marks the twelfth anniversary since my Mother passed away.  (Hence the yellow flowers, which were her favourite).

My mother was not perfect, and as often is the case with mother daughter relationships, ours was not perfect.  (I’m not sure if this is true with most, but in my case I think I resented the fact that she made mothering look so darn easy!)  The cooking, baking, sewing, cleaning, home making and mothering in general.  She made it look too  easy.  For the record it isn’t! It is hard work and takes more skill and talent than I ever possessed.  🙄

Mother’s greatest skills shone in the kitchen.  It wasn’t just that she managed to prepare delicious meals, year round, on a very tight budget.  It wasn’t that she prepared a feast for EVERY single holiday.  It was that on top of all that, my mother was way ahead of her time when it came to serving up healthy, nutritious food at every meal she prepared.

My mother was born in 1918.  She was third eldest, in a family of ten – seven boys and three girls.  Mother obviously did her share of cooking, cleaning, laundry, and the like.  Growing up (on a farm no less) there was always plenty of experience to be had.  Growing up through the Dirty Thirties, taught her all about doing it all  on a tight budget.

When my Mother grew up,  she went to work as a cook’s assistant  at the Gravelbourg Hospital.  There, under the careful watch of the Catholic Nuns who ran the kitchen, Mother learned all about cooking healthy meals and baking appetizing deserts.   In those days, feeding patients nutritious, strength building foods was a thing.  The meals that patients were fed, were considered as important as the medicines that they were given and the medical procedures that they underwent.

My mother learned a lot about preparing and serving healthy meals in her time working in the hospital kitchen.  Over the years, we were fortunate that she used this  knowledge and skill to nourish us and ultimately our families.

That will always be remembered – and it will always be appreciated. 🌻💞

* A win for sodium and processed sugar by health guideline standards, but a true win for me and my lungs is 0 Grams of processed sugar!   I am not happy with Kraft for putting  the  five grams of sugar in the barbecue sauce, or for myself for not noticing it.  I seldom use condiments and neither Dan or I typically use barbecue sauce.  We keep it for company, and I just grabbed it last night, thinking it would be quick and easy. 🤦

That is it for today.  Take care and have a great day! 🌞💞

Daily Food Diary – Day 89

It has been 89 Days since I started my Daily Food Diary.  Some days look better than others.

This one missed the mark. I went over on calories and I went under on protein.  But, if I average the calories and the protein for the past week, it does average out.  And if I take a panoramic view of how I am doing lately, I am not disappointed.

I have been working at improving my water intake.  I was drifting back to my pre diary days for a while, so have been working on a correction there.  I have also been foregoing the carbonated water for regular filtered water.   I read lately that carbonated water is not recommended for people like me, with lung issues. We will see if this helps.

With the cold wind finally dying down, Dan and Molly, and I went walking yesterday.  We stayed in our neighbourhood, traveling down sidewalks that are still covered with ice ruts, snow, and water.   It doesn’t relate well to what I can claim for calories burnt but it is walking, at a slow pace, all stumbling and sliding aside.  One doesn’t get credit for staying upright for the duration – or for the fresh air that helps my lungs.

I have been sleeping well, using my soft headphones to listen to sleep meditations when I go to bed at night.

And I have been making progress with my stress and anxiety management, which is huge for controlling my asthma, COPD, and bronchiectasis.

Overall, my life is pretty good, and I am doing a pretty solid job of managing my health and wellness.  Candy coated Easter eggs aside… And spoiler alert, if you thought that matrimonial cake went on forever, don’t hold your breath waiting for me to polish off my JUMBO bag of Easter Eggs. 🙄

Daily Food Diary – Day 38 of 365

Thirty-eight days in and this isn’t shaping up to be a good one.   A few years ago this would have been one of those days that put me over the edge – or at least kept me clinging to it for  dear life.

There is nothing drastically wrong in my life today.  It is just one of those days where every little thing goes wrong.

I woke up to a balmy minus 40C  (feels like). In reality it was  only minus 30C.   I made sausage and egg breakfast sandwiches and Dan’s sausage decided not to cook.  My computer was glitching, also my phone.   My phone worked, it just refused to make calls.  Since Dan was going to drive our Maddy to work,  I needed to call her to make sure she was ready.   Dan took the garbage out when he left.   I got into a  battle with the new  garbage bag.  I wanted to put  it in the garbage can and  it did not want to go.    Ultimately, I prevailed, but things got ugly.  Meanwhile, Molly dog was on a tear while I was trying to do a video for my accountability group.  Again, I prevailed but not before I accidentally deleted my video.  Finally,  I managed to complete my aerobics without incident but I have been experiencing coughing and  sneezing fits ever since.  Sigh…

It could be a long day.  I might even make a few poor food choices. 🙄 But this will be a good day to mark on my diary, because I know that tomorrow is another day – and it will be better!   Looking back through this year, there will be more days like today – and more better days that follow.   And this Daily Food Diary will be the solid proof I need  to remind myself that such is life.
