January 3rd – Day 2 of My 2026 Daily Activity Journal

When I decided to focus on improving my level of activity in 2026, I was excited to do so.  I had been taking collagen supplements for four or five months and they were doing wonders for me! I was enjoying so many benefits – the best of which was a stability in my lungs that I had not experienced for five years.

My lungs were doing so well that my constant cough was down to a slight annoyance.   Most notable was my morning walk with Dan and Molly,  where amazingly I could keep up with them without triggering any coughing, much less the violent coughing fits that I had grown accustomed to.

Out and about on a crisp morning walk. 💞

So, I was anticipating welcoming 2026 STRONG!  I was anticipating increasing  the amount and intensity of my physical activities.  I was anticipating everything that would become easier in my day to day life – any and all of those daily chores that I struggled with – operating our snowblower, moving furniture to vaccuum,  lifting our larger pots and pans.

And then… I was called up for my hernia surgery.   It shouldn’t be a big deal.  It wouldn’t be a big deal – especially once the anaesthesioligist  decided to go with a spinal, rather than general, anaesthetic.

I went through my presurgical clinic, followed all the required preparations.  I showed up for my surgery ready to crush it and leave, strong and able.

But, I didn’t.  I came out of surgery congested, coughing, struggling to get  and keep my oxygen levels up to acceptable levels.  I figured it was from lingering freezing, from the stress of being in the operating room surrounded by stangers and the buzz and beeps of the monitors that surrounded me.  I thought I would be fine when I got home.

But I wasn’t.  I was not in acute pain, but I felt rough.  While I tried to keep up my strength by moving around the house.   I definitely was not working out (which my surgeon had cleared me to do).  I was not going outside to get fresh air or challenging the snow and ice covered streets with a walk.   I was indulging in the comfort foods of the season – and resting.

And I was feeling progressively worse.  My lungs still felt stable but my cough was getting worse.  So I did what I do – I panicked.  My mind played out memories from the past prior to aerobics, collagen supplements, mindful eating, air purifiers, fresh air walks, and treadmill and light weight workouts.

I KNEW that my respiratory system was failing.  Another session of antibiotics and Prednisone became a disturbing possibility.  The memory of regular, miserable, exhausting chills and fevers kept me awake at night.  Checking my tissue after each violent coughing fit became a terrifying reminder of pneumonia and mucus thick with blood clots from deep in my lungs.  I was a mess..

Until, I said NO to everything my mind was throwing at me.  I know my lungs are stronger.  I know I am healthier.  I know that whatever happened in that operating room was NOT traumatic enough to destroy everything that I have worked for in the past four years.

And I remembered… after the anaesthesiologist did my spinal he helped  me to lay down, adjusted my pillow,  AND he placed a mask on my face and told me he would give me a bit of oxygen to help keep me comfortable.

I don’t KNOW what my deal with oxygen systems is (I am pretty sure I know..) but when I spent three weeks in this hospital years ago with pneumonia, a collapsed lung, and epyema, the worst thing was the oxygen.  It destroyed my sinuses, it made me miserable, and while I felt better after they took it off – the effects lasted for weeks.

Anyway, I am not dying!  🤦‍♀️

I am not greeting 2026 with unlimited strength and stamina ready to transcend all previous efforts to meet and surpass every  physical challenge that presents itself.

But, I am ready to transcend this habit of mine of taking every minor health setback and turning it into a medical crisis.  I am gradually taking back my daily workouts, my diet controls, and my fresh air fixes.

And I have regained my excitent and anticipation of 2026.  I am committed to increasing my level of activity and finishing this year stronger and healthier than I started it.

When you’re on the older side of the age spectrum, you often get more credit than you deserve for simply showing up to do some- thing physically challenging. Nobody expects much from you and the temptation is there to perform to those very low expectations. Showing up is an important first step, but if you plan to show up, you may as well show the  f#@k up!

I am not positive if this quote came from David Goggins or if it was Dane Sanders, but today it is my motivation to move forward.

January 2nd – Day One of My 2026 Daily Activity Journal

Yesterday we rang in the New Year and I turned the page on my Health & Wellness Journey.

To wrap up my 2025 Daily Food Diary – While I  looked forward to the day when I could revert to my old eating habits with none the wiser – yesterday that DID NOT happen.  I had a reasonable breakfast, a measured snack with our afternoon tea, and for supper –  hot (air fried) chicken wings with a large serving of raw vegetables and dip accompanied by a large glass of water.   👍

To kick off my 2026 Daily Activity Journal –

This is ME!

Age 70,  height 5’1″,  weight 119.8 pounds

My commitment for 2026 is to increase my level of activity,  be it structured exercise or an everyday part of a healthier lifestyle.

My goal for 2026 is to sign up for, attend, and complete an in person aerobics course. 😁

My word for 2026 is TRANSCENDING !

Since I started my Health and Wellness Journey (almost) four years ago, I have been through multiple phases..

1) My original motivation was suffering.  Despite being recently retired, my quality of life was a reflection of my poor health and fitness.

2) I leveled  up to struggling.  I knew that change was my only option but it was hard – and setbacks came often.

3) Next came surviving.  I was making the changes that needed to be made, but I was in that dreadful plateau phase of fitness where results are hard to recognize.

4) Finally, I reached a level of progressing where win was built on win,  and momentum was in my favor.

5)  Now, I have reached that transcending phase in my Health and Fitness Journey – where I part company with  thoughts and ideas from my past that are not defining factors in where I am or where I want to go.

I have, and will continue to have, chronic health issues – asthma, bronchiectasis, possible COPD, allergies, and collagen deficiencies…

But,  I am no longer weak and sickly.  I am no longer at a place where every sniffle or sneeze is a sign of an imminent health crisis.  I am no longer naive enough to belive that treatments that never ever worked for me are my only hope for health and well being.  I am no longer struggling to live my life on a daily basis, limited to where I can go, or what I can do.

Despite multiple chronic health conditions, I am strong. I am healthy. I am proactive. I am committed to living a lifestyle that avoids flare ups and potential health crisis.

It is not about living longer.  It is about living BETTER.   This year, by transcending beliefs that no longer serve me, I know that my life will be better. 🤗

My 2026 Daily Activity Journal:

Yesterday, was a day of reflexion, commitment, and healing (more on that tomorrow).

I cleared my lungs a number of times.

I drank a LOT of water.

I rested.

I did my aerobics.

I ventured outside for some fresh air and some quality time with our Molly dog.

Thats it for today! Take care and have a great day! 🤗💞

Daily Food Diary – Day 363 of 365

Today is Day 363 of my Daily Food Diary.  THREE days and I will have fulfilled my commitment to maintain and post my Food Diary for one full year!

Every single day during this past year, I have benefited from this exercise.  My Daily Food Diary WIN yesterday, was having the knowledge, practice, and incentive to switch out of holiday mode and serve up a healthy supper of fresh salad with baked chicken.   😀

Outside of my Daily Food Diary wins, I continue to acknowledge my basic life wins every day.

Today, my Daily WINS include:

1) The variety and quality of foods  that we have available to us.. With each trip to the super market,  we have access to fresh, frozen or packaged dairy products, vegetables, fruits, meat, baked goods and more.   Our foods are produced locally or shipped to us from around the globe.  There are  people the world over  that cannot conceive of the abundance that we too often, and too easily, take for granted.   For us, our food supply is a daily win in our lives. 🥦🍖🍪

2) My waist! I know that is odd, but for too many years I struggled to bend over because my gut got in the way, I struggled to sit because my gut pressed into my lungs, and I struggled to buy clothes because properly fitted clothing is not designed for narrow hips and shoulders and big bellies.  🤦‍♀️

It took FOUR years, but I am happy to be in the shape that I am in now!

3) Peace and quiet…  at the busiest, noisiest  times of my life – I cherished moments of peace and quiet.  I craved silence.  Nowadays, it is almost an obsession.  I love those random moments of silence in my day to day life.  I notice them, I appreciate them, and to this day, I  absolutely  cherish  them.  🤫

Daily Food Diary – Day 362 of 365

Today is Day 362 of my Daily Food Diary! FOUR days to go, before I level up to my 2026 Daily Activity Journal! 💃

This morning I have been thinking about  my life in general, so today my Daily WINS are wins that I get to appreciate every day!

1) Retirement…There is no downside.  The best days are amazing.  The rough days – still amazing.  Sick – I don’t have to go to work or miss time.  Snow, ice, pitch dark at 7:30 am when everyone (else) is driving to work – I don’t have to! Bored or lonely – never! Lower income –  not really a problem (apparently we wasted a lot of money working 🙃).

2) Being Canadian – I love Canada and cannot imagine living anywhere else.   Canada is an oasis of natural beauty,  strength, and true values.  We who live here are fortunate indeed.

Wascana Trails – Minutes from life in the city…

3) Life – this opportunity to live and learn and love – to grow and evolve physically, mentally, and emotionally.   I have no idea what form my life takes after this – but I do know that ‘this’ is a small incredibly important step in my journey.

My Daily Food Diary win for the day has been the  opportunity to discover and experience new flavors and foods.   Often this come about by Dan, Jennifer, or Genie sourcing out products or recipes to try – but many have become my newest favorite.

Daily Food Diary – Day 361 of 365

Today is Day 361 of my Daily Food Diary! With only FIVE more days to go, I should finish off my 2025 Daily Food Diary Challenge without one single glitch! 😁

My Daily WINS since I posted yesterday were pretty cool:

1) Dan and I watched not one, but TWO movies last night and we enjoyed both of them.. “The Hitman’s Body Guard” and “Hitman’s Wife’s Body Guard”.

2) Making bacon.. not just any BACON, son Dan’s home smoked bacon that I fried up for breakfast this morning – to perfection!

Son Dan’s Traeger Smoker/Barbecue – where all the magic happens.   (Husband Dan starting the Father’s Day Prime Rib.)

3) Getting my aerobics done yesterday, plus a bit of snow removal from our front and back steps and clearing Molly’s track on our  side patio.   (It was way more about getting a bit of fresh air than getting a workout.)

My Daily Food Diary WIN was a super special one for me.

This win was all about practicing self discipline, which came in handy over the past few days.  Having a houseful of sweet treats following a couple of major hits to my compromised lungs, was NOT a good thing – but I was able to keep my indulgence in check!   I even managed to take a pass on the rootbeer I really wanted with my nachos last last night, and today I reaped the reward.

Short term pain for long term gain! 97 percent blood oxygen is VERY GOOD and would not have happened if my lungs were  clogged with thick mucus caused by ingesting excess sugar.

This win is the heart and soul of my Health and Wellness Journey.  It isn’t about  winning medals or beauty contests, or living forever.    It is ALL about Living Well and Feeling Good

Today I feel Good!  ☺️

Daily Food Diary – Day 360 of 365

Today is Day 360 of my Daily Food Diary – my 360th consecutive day of   diligently tracking everything I have consumed.  🎇

I have noted a number of benefits that I have recognized from this exercise.  The win that I am celebrating today is the positive use I have made of the internet to source out helpful nutritional information.  We hear so much about how detrimental the internet can be to us.  It never fails to amaze me how useful it can be as well.

Workout videos on You Tube have been invaluable to me over the past four years. Now I have branched out to ‘yeast free’ recipes, nutritional information, health supplements, and more.  👍

My current Daily WINS  are probably relatable for many:

1) Enjoying these days between Christmas and New Year’s when meals are simple and easy with plentiful leftovers on hand.

2) Relaxing with a good book or a new Christmas Jigsaw puzzle.

Maybe not quite so relatable if your  children received ‘some parental assistance required’ Christmas gifts from Grandpa & Grandma. 🤭

3) A fresh blanket of snow that turns the world into a winter wonderland.

Especially if you are a ‘Queen of the SnowDog!

Daily Food Diary – Day 359 of 365

Today is Day 359 of my Daily Food Diary. ☺️

Six days left to go!

Yesterday after we got back from brunch and gift giving at Genie and Alec’s, we settled in  for a peaceful afternoon with Molly.

My afternoon snack consisted of one Gin and Tonic and three delectable chocolates.  Our supper was leftover Chinese Food from Dan & Amanda’s visit followed by a cup of hot tea.  Again, for the second day in a row – no calories were counted

Today is Boxing Day in Canada.  Traditionally, people would rush out today to take advantage of  post Christmas sales. (A tradition that I consistently avoided).

I prefer the rest, relax, and recover tradition.

Enjoying memories of Maddy’s very first Annual Boxing Day Sleepover… this year she will be at work hosting little ones on their way home from Boxing Day sleepovers. 💞
And,  indulging in my annual Christmas Jigsaw puzzle event.

I will also be getting into  Recovery Mode by doing my aerobics this morning and heading outdoors for some fresh air this afternoon.

It is time to start rebuilding so that I am ready to head into the new year  with the strength and stamina to work on reaching my AMAZING, FABULOUS, GINORMOUS 2026 HEALTH AND FITNESS GOAL!

Take care and have a great day! 🤗💞

Daily Food Diary – Day 354 of 365

Today is Day 354 of my Daily Food Diary! 🌺

Yesterday after I posted my blog, I hit a setback of sorts on my way to recovery.   I did get the livingroom floor done, decorations up, and some general tidying up done before I crashed.  My surgical wound was swollen and ITCHY and I was just exhausted.  Fortunately, today I am back on track and I feel just FINE!

So,  for today’s wins:

1) I feel FINE!

2) Dan, Amanda, and family are on the road and the roads are in relatively good shape today.  (Much better than usual these days!)  We are looking forward to seeing them and their pups.

Bacardii & Cornelius

3) We have sunshine today! Once again,  Dan and Molly walked without me due to the cold and the poor walking conditions which I am not quite ready to tackle – but it is uplifting to see the sunshine, nonetheless!

My Daily Food Diary roundup WIN for the day…

Balance – Balancing calories, protein, cholesterol (saturated fats), and collagen was a challenge for sure – but it  is something that I have, and continue to, work on!

Air fried chicken wings – high in collagen, protein and calories – relatively low in fat. 🤷‍♀️

Daily Food Diary – Day 351 of 365

Today is Day 351 of my Daily Food Diary and I am still on track for a perfect run of 365 days! 😁

I have plenty of wins to celebrate today!

First and foremost, my hernia surgery is behind me.  I do NOT do hospitals well,  but I was fortunate that Dan plugged through the latest experience with me.

Second, despite yesterday’s ‘Alberta Clipper’ which apparently is a heavy freezing rain followed by plunging temperatures and a major blizzard – our family (and our vehicles) survived it with no major issue. (Our power didn’t even go out, while that was the norm in much of the city.)

And third..Yay for warm winter outerwear and the new snowblower we got last year.  Dan got our walks, patio, and area behind our garage cleared up in an hour.  (Plus did in front of and behind a couple of our neighbours’ homes.)

For my Daily Food Diary  December Wrap-up Win of the Day  I would have to go with focusing on nutritional values.  This morning,  Dan made me an awesome breakfast of poached eggs, bacon, and potato patties.  An abundance of protein to help me heal from my surgery – easy peasey!

Daily Food Diary – Day 349 of 365

Today is Day 349 of my Daily Food Diary. 🥳

Yesterday, I had a few wins to celebrate:

1) I walked with Dan and Molly in the morning, did my aerobics in the afternoon and went for a spin on the treadmill in the evening.

2) I got most of the house vacuumed, scrubbed,  and tidied up – while dan washed all of the bedding.  Even if I am totally knocked down by my little surgery tomorrow, the house will be in order when son Dan and family arrive on the weekend.

3) I messaged with one of my nieces yesterday and it was all good news with her and hers! 🤗

This morning I awoke to a weird win…

I swear, since my Mother passed away in 2013, she communicates in music – music and hymns that I am vaguely familiar with.   I woke up to this tune playing in my mind this morning. (?) Not my favourite but not the worst way to wake up. 😂

My Daily Food Diary win for the day…

Cutting back on restaurant meals and on using processed foods at home.  We still get take out, eat out, and use some processed foods – but we have cut back a lot and Dan and I are both better off without the additives and extra salt and sugars.  👍

Good, nourishing, and natural (mostly)!
