Daily Food Diary – Day 342 of 365

Daily Food Diary – Day 342

Today is Day 342 of my Daily Food Diary! ๐Ÿ˜

Today I started the day off with a few wins…

1) I went for a morning walk with Dan & Molly.  100 % humidity and I made the full route!

2) Dan remembered that I had to go for blood tests today in preparation for my pre-surgery appointment on Friday (which I may or may not remember).  He also drove me to the blood clinic, so double win! The streets are icy, the traffic is heavy,  and no people can’t drive. ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ

3) Dan stopped at the Dollar Store on the way home so I could pick up a  few things for Christmas..

2 plastic containers for baking (because they only had 2 of the size I needed).  Yes they will go to Dan and Amanda’s full of baking and they will never come back.  (Which is why I buy them from the Dollar Store ๐Ÿ˜‚)  Gingerbread girl & boy because we need one new decoration, gift ribbon, and new dish towels.

For my December Round Up of my Daily Food Diary, I have one win today but it was/is a biggie…

I have pretty much eliminated evening snacking.ย  It was never about being hungry – just mindless munching.ย  Not only has this helped me to drop 13 pounds this year, but it has also helped me to sleep better.ย  I am generally out cold from 10:30 until Molly starts booping me with her big cold nose (6:30 ish at this time of year).ย

Every morning is a Molly morning!

Daily Food Diary – Day 333 of 365

Today is Day 333 of my Daily Food Diary. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Tomorrow is the first day of December.ย  I have always thought that in December my focus would be to review my 2025 Food Diary.ย  Since I have been working on being mindful of and grateful for the wins in my life lately, this will work out perfectly. ย ย  Everyday, I will note the wins that I have experienced from my 365 day challenge.ย  ๐Ÿฅณ

Today it is the coldest of our cold days so far.ย  Molly doesn’t even seem terribly excited about a walk so I am pretty sure it will be another off day.ย  Dan’s backย  is feeling somewhat better, but another rest day will be good for him as well.

Latest wins…

1) Dan washed dishes after supper last night.ย  I did wipe them and put them away, but that is easy easy compared to washing, so it was a nice break.ย

2) I completed most of our shopping last night.ย  It took me a long time to get up to speed with online shopping, but nowadays it is a definite win.ย ย

3) I received my 6th monthly shipment of collagen supplements this morning.ย ย  They are my first ever subscription order – very handy and a bit of a deal, too.

Definitely the biggest win from my ‘Daily Food Diary’.ย ย  These collagen supplements have been life changing – and onlyย  in a good way! ๐Ÿ’ž

Daily Food Diary – Day 323 of 365

This is Day 323 of my Daily Food Diary.  323 Days in and this is the closest I have come to missing posting my blog.  ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Our humidity was finally down this morning, so I joined Dan and Molly for a  walk.   We stopped at the dog park for a while so Molly got in a good run with her friends, but set us back a bit.

We got home and I did some poo cleanup in the yard, fed the squirrels, brought in the mail, and had a bath.  By then, I was just all sorts of off track for the day.

It has been almost five months since I started taking collagen supplements.ย  I have seen a number of benefits and a few changes in my health/body that I wasn’t expecting.

The weirdest change could be to my hands.ย  They feel a little better and they are stronger, but they also look different!

They look kind of alien- ish and the color is offย  (seriously difficult to take pictures of my ownย  hands) but my veins (or arteries?) are almost gone.ย  The left side photos were taken in July.

I have been noticing the change for a few months.  Whatever is going on, my blood pressure and pulse are fine.  ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

Daily Food Diary – Day 314 of 365

Today is Day 314 of my Daily Food Diary. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Today is November 11th, 2025ย  – Remembrance Day in Canada and Veterans Day in the USA – a day for us to show respect and appreciation for those who have served our countries,ย  so that we may live in peace.ย ย  That is no doubt the greatest gift that anyone could give, and one that should be honored every day in my mind.ย  ๐ŸŒบ

I am finally getting back on track with my Health and Fitness.ย  Between myย  collagen supplements, Quercetin, and local raw honey – and our morning walks, my aerobics, light weights – and especially my treadmill time, my lungs (and myย  body in general)ย  are getting stronger all of the time.

I know that I have always had, and will always have asthma.ย  I know that it will be triggered by humidity, allergies, and stress.ย  I will be on inhalers for the rest of my life.ย  But, I have always had doubts about my diagnosis for COPD and bronchiectasis, so we will see about that as time goes on…

It has all been rather frustrating to get to the point where I am at, but it brings to mind my favourite quote from Rumi:

“It’s your road, and yours alone.
others may walk it with you,
but no one can walk it for you.”

Before (and after)ย I retired five years ago, I read several retirement planning articles. They all stressed the importance of wealth – being financially secure was the be all and end all of successful retirement.ย ย ย

Those articles were wrong.ย  I know people who have money – a lot of money.ย  They (for the most part) spend their time stressing about losing their money.

People who prioritize their health, prioritize  living their best life – regardless of any challenges or setbacks (financial or otherwise) that arise.  That’s the best  retirement plan in my mind – and the road that I choose to follow.

Daily Food Diary – Day 288 of 365

This is Day 288 of my Daily Food Diary! ๐Ÿฅณ

I  have a few things happening these days..

1) My food focus this month is on changing from our light summer barbecue diet to a heartier diet of winter comfort foods.ย ย  Last night, I used one of the pork tenderloins that we had bought to barbecue and serve on salad.ย ย  However, I roasted it in our small convection oven and served it with home fries, gravy, and steamed broccoli.ย  Very seasonal.  ๐Ÿ™‚

2) This morning, I walked Molly solo…

Molly

For the first few blocks all went well.ย  Molly was excellent – the image of those large mellow dogs that one sees out and about or in random photos on social media posts.

Anyway, Molly is just walking along, while I am scanning the vicinity for any potential issues.

I catch a slight glimpse of a vehicle coming up behind us.ย ย  I glance down to Molly, just as it rolls to a stop beside us.ย  Molly lunges in front of me and attempts to catapult herselfย  through an openย  window.ย  I am desperately holding her by her pinch collar and trying to drag her away from the vehicle.ย  When I finally, glance up I see daughter Jennifer and granddaughter Maddyย  laughing and reaching out to her.

I didn’t get that photo. ๐Ÿคฆ

3)ย  Recently I went back to doing light weights three times a week. Since I amย  waiting to have surgery to repair my epigastric hernia, I have been cautious – using only five pound weights.ย ย  Taking collagen supplements has increased my upper body strength to the point that I haveย  decided it was time to move back up toย  eight pound weights.ย  Considering how long it had originally taken me to work my way up to five pounders (before collagen supplements), it seems amazing that they just aren’t doing it for me anymore. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ˜

Daily Food Diary – Day 287 of 365

Today is Day 287 of my Daily Food Diary! ๐Ÿ™‚

Today it is three and a half months since I started taking collagen supplements.

Throughout July and August, I noticed multiple benefits – from easing stiff achy hands, stronger longer nails, thicker stronger hair (and a virtual end to hair loss),ย  improved muscle strength – especially in my hands and upper body, increased stability in my joints,ย  and best of all increased stability in my sinuses and airways.

At the beginning of September, I saw my respirologist and,ย  because I was still coughing up an abundance of mucus, he put me on a round of antibiotics and Prednisone.ย  Neither of which have ever agreed with me – but which at times were deemed a medical necessity.

Throughout September I suffered the loss of a lot of the benefits from the collagen supplements.ย  It started gradually with broken nails and shedding hairs and went downhill from there.ย

Sometime in this demoralizing period I ran across articles that claimed Prednisone can/does inhibit collagen synthesis.   (That makes so much sense considering my history – despite the fact that I had continued to take my collagen supplements.)

I finished this last round of Prednisone on September 13th.ย ย  Last week things finally began to turn around.ย  Again, I noticed the improvements first in my hands, then nails, then hair ….

This morning, I went for a walk with Dan and Molly.ย  Despite 100 percent humidity, I went the full distance, barely feeling the humidity until the last few blocks. ๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿ’“

6 degrees Celsius – 42.8 degrees Fahrenheit

I am so so excited that this setback appears to be behind me!ย  Hopefully I can avoid any more setbacks (and Prednisone) going forward!ย  Most of all, I am excited that once again, I feel that I am capable of moving forward, stronger, and healthier! ๐ŸŽˆ

Daily Food Diary – Day 286 of 365

Today is Day 286 of my Daily Food Diary! ๐Ÿ’

Seventy Days left ofย  2025 and so far I haven’t missed a single day of keeping up and posting my Daily Food Diary!

No matter what, I have not missed a single day!ย  That is more than I can say for the rest of my daily routine.ย

Having chronic health issues, there is the potential for multiple wins, if one is willing to make health a priority.ย  Unfortunately, there is also the risk of unavoidable setbacks.

Having been diagnosed with asthma, bronchiectasis, and COPD – weather, seasonal allergies, environmental pollution, and more can trigger flare ups.ย  Flare ups also make one more susceptible to infection, which is routinely treated with antibiotics and Prednisoneย  – both of which have detrimental effects on my health.ย ย

In early September I went through my latestย  setback complete with a round of antibiotics and prednisone.ย  I am finally seeing the last of these effects wearing off and feeling ready to get back on track.ย  ๐Ÿ‘

Last night we had a visit from our Granddaughter Genie.ย  Over tea – and a last minute supper of Oriental appetizers, we had a chat about investment strategies.ย  A topic Genie had expressed interest in recently.   We talked about everything from stocks and bonds to mutual funds – but mostly we discussed the different tax saving accounts available to keep them in.ย ย ย  Notย  a particularly exciting topic,  but important for a young couple starting out – looking to buy their first home, start a family,ย  save for major expenses, and ultimately plan for  retirement.ย ย

I’m no financial expert, but  I do have an idea of what is available, where to find more information, and who to go to for the level of advice that I cannot provide.

Fresh from the wedding and ready to plan for the responsibilities of their life together.

The great thing about helping Genie and Alec with anything like this is knowing that they will pass anything they learn down to their younger siblings,  when the time comes.

Daily Food Diary – Day 284 of 365

Today is Day 284 of my Daily Food Diary! ๐Ÿ˜‰

This month (October) I am focusing on how the change of season affects our diet.  So far, I have waffled between summer barbecue, to hearty soups or stews, to light salads, to a full blown Thanksgiving supper.

Today, It is cold and WET!ย  I am not sure there is a meal that is geared to deal with that.ย  We had Denver omelets for breakfast.ย  I am thinking something ‘Light Comfort’ for supper. Whatever that is?

Before the rain started coming down last night, Dan and I did a lot of yard and garden cleanup.ย  Dan worked at packingย  away the patio furniture and gazebo coverings.ย  I picked the last of the tomatoes and peppers and pulled out the plants.ย

A number of the tomato plants had oddly stunted root systems, but deeply rooted or not, I got all of them pulled out and into the green bin.ย  I am truly impressed with the strength I have!

Out front, the leaves are finally falling but the grass is only getting greener as the rain continues to fall. ๐Ÿ™„

Daily Food Diary – Day 268 of 365

Today is Day 268 of my Daily Food Diary! ๐Ÿ’—

This year is going by so fast.  I can’t believe October is almost here. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ   I am not sure what I will be doing as a focus for October, but I am thinking something along the lines of seasonal food trends.  With fall comes soups, stews, Thanksgiving, Halloween… I could work with that.

I did some more baking for Jen & family yesterday.  I have a blueberry cheesecake in the fridge, a chocolate and amaretto one to make today, and a roaster of smoked beans that I promised Maddy & Prim tomorrow.

It has been almost three months since I started taking collagen supplements.  Yesterday, I realized another shift that has occurred over the past few days… I have virtually no urge for between meal or evening snacks.

I haven’t been snacking that much since I started my Food Diary, but I have still felt really hungry and weak at times ( A lot of times ๐Ÿ˜). ย  That just ‘ran out of steam’ feeling.ย  I don’t get that anymore.ย  My stamina is improving with my strength.ย  โ˜บ๏ธ

Last night, after cooking all afternoon, cleaning up, making supper, cleaning up AGAIN, I went into the spare room at nine thirty and did 30 minutes on the treadmill. It is getting marginally easier every time, but still I was proud of myself that I got it done last night. ๐Ÿคฉ

Fall is here with a vengeance today.  It is cold and windy.  We are shaking things up a bit this morning.  Dan is gone for a haircut and a bit of shopping while I do my blog and my aerobics.  We will walk Molly once it (hopefully) warms up a bit.

Daily Food Diary – Day 266 of 365

This is Day 266 of my Daily Food Diary! ๐Ÿ˜Š

Yesterday we had a busy and productive day.  We got our garage reshingled.  I can’t see it from our yard but apparently it looks fine and with four experienced roofers it was finished in four hours.    Molly was relieved when they were gone.  She was  beside herself with anxiety while they were up there.  ๐Ÿค”

Back to her happy self ๐Ÿ˜Š

Jennifer, Prim,  and I got a bit  of baking and a lot of visiting in yesterday.  Jen is supposed to return this afternoon for another round

This morning Dan, Molly, and I went for our morning walk.  That was uneventful.

When we got back, I sat down for a minute with my phone before starting this blog and then doing my aerobics and light weights.

I have no idea why, or where it came from, but I found myself going down some rabbit hole of a discussion regarding how today’s young mothers are much betterย  parents and people than my generation was/is.ย

I remember when my eldest was about six months old and I felt likewise.  I am grateful that we did not have Facebook to memorialize my naivety back in those days.

Like most parents since the beginning of time, I did my best.  Trying to compare how I did compared to my parents or my children? I would win some, I would lose some.  The world changes from one generation to another.  Parenting must  adapt,  even though the basic premise and core values remain the same.

They survived and turned out well enough. Our family is, and always will be, a work in progress.  As will theirs! ๐Ÿ’ž
