Daily Food Diary –ย  Day 100 of 365

It is 100 DAYS since I began my 365 Day Daily Food Diary.  ๐Ÿ’–

100 days and by yesterday’s numbers,  I am not terribly impressed.  Not only did I consume   MORE than double my processed sugar goal, but today my lungs are noticeably paying for it.   A few years ago, this would have been one of those days to consider throwing in the towel and giving up this obviously futile effort.

But, this isn’t three years ago.  This is NOW. This is not an “All or Nothing” exercise.   Even on my worst days, this is an “ALL OR SOMETHING” exercise.

Despite a couple of bad decisions yesterday, I am celebrating the good decisions that I make everyday.ย  The few of these, and handful of those,ย  that I pass on throughout the day.ย  The carbonated drinks that I pass on every day.ย  The healthy salads that I make,  when I would prefer something less nutritious.ย  All of the SOMETHINGS that I do every day to prove that I am being more mindful of what I consume, than I was before I started this exercise.

The bottom line is, I am not throwing in the towel.  This exercise is working – even on the bad days when a few maraschino cherries and a little wee Sesame Snap don’t seem like a bad idea. ๐Ÿ™„

Daily Food Diary –  Day 98 of 365

This is my 98th day of posting my Daily Food Diary.   That is a full 14 weeks.  ๐Ÿ™Œ  It is a pretty solid habit by now.  One that I should be able to easily maintain,  moving forward. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Staying committed to living  a healthy active lifestyle can be reasonably easy, if we build solid habits along the way.

Building good habits has been relatively easy when it comes to diet, activity, and developing  healthy sleep conditions.

Building good habits to develop stress management has been more difficult for me.  Chronic lung issues cause stress and stress exasperates lung issues.  (I think that is  true of any chronic health issues,  whether the issues are breathing difficulties, pain, heart palpitations…)

Fortunately, I have developed one habit that has helped me with healthy stress management.

Over a year ago, I started listening to You Tube meditations when I go to bed.  I have found countless guided meditations, nature meditations, musical meditations, etc.   The biggest issue I had was falling asleep wearing ear buds –  never ended well!

Fortunately my daughter, suggested trying  a soft sleep headphones product.  That was a gamechanger for me!

I didn’t put in a link as I use the Canadian Amazon site.  These are relatively inexpensive – about ($30. CDN) and well worth the price from my experience.

Daily Food Diary – Day 97 of 365

I am 97 days into my Daily Food Diary.ย  That leaves 268 days to go.ย

When I adopted a Healthy and Active Lifestyle three years ago, my driving mantra was “My future self will thank me!” ย  That thought kept me pushing through the difficult, frustrating, day to day pain and struggle.

Three years later, my life is so much better because I am so much healthier, stronger, and happier.ย  AND… I am THANKFUL for everything that my past self did to get me there.

97 days into my Daily Food Diary, I am beginning to realize health benefits from being more mindful of what I am consuming and the changes that I have made to my eating habits.ย  I am thankful for what I started and I am excited to see how much better my future self will be faring in 268 days.ย  ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿค—๐Ÿค—

I have to wonder if this future self work is typical for most people.ย ย  To be honest, doing anything for myself was pretty much a foreign concept to me until three years ago.  ๐Ÿ˜ข

Are you doing anything to make life easier/better for your future self?  If so, what do you do?

Daily Food Diary – Day 96 of 365

It is 96 Days since I started my Daily Food Diary, making mindful eating aย  part of my dailyย  Health and Fitness Lifestyle.

This month, I am tracking, and working to minimize,  the sodium and processed sugar I consume, while continuing to note my calorie count.

At the bottom of today’s diary entry, it is obvious that yesterday was a major fail looking at my calorie and sodium numbers.ย

But, this diary isn’t  about how the numbers play out each day.ย  It is about finding issues with my diet  and making adjustments to improve it.

Last night for supper, I had a fewย  Lay’s Lightly Salted Chips.ย  So…ย  (1) Dan is going out of his way to look for lowerย  sodium alternates for us.ย  AND ...ย  (2)ย  They weren’t bad.ย  The crunch was there! That was a win.

The Harvest hot dogs we had contained a shocking amount of sodium.ย  That was a fail. But, this morning I did a bit of research and found that if we switch back to Maple Leaf Top Dogs – regular or low salt – we can still enjoy the occasional hotdog without stroking out from the sodium content.ย  That’s a win.

There wasn’t really a win in the calorie column, but it is still good toย  get a dose of reality once in a while.ย  Pasta and processed meats – not a winning combination.

Quite honestly, the Bran Muffin wasn’t much of a win either.ย  I don’t know if it was substituting high protein yogurt for the buttermilk or if it was because I kind of scorched the poor things, but theyย  haveย  the consistency and flavour of burnt golf balls.ย  Numbers be danged – for MYย  birthday in July we are having a Co-op Salted Caramel Cake.ย

Best Cake Ever!

96 days into my 365 Day Food Diary and I am still finding issues with my diet and working toย  correct them.  That’s a win in my book.  As long as I keep learning and adjusting, it is worth doing for the full year.

Daily Food Diary – Day 94 of 365

It is 94 days since I started keeping my Daily Food Diary and making a serious effort to become a mindful eater.

This month, I am working on tracking and reducing my salt and processed sugar consumption – while still tracking my overall calories.ย ย  Yesterday, I hit the trifecta reaching all three goals that I was aiming for.ย  Yay me!ย

Our weather is improving which is definitely going to help me reach some non food goals – especially the fresh air and exercise.ย  Yesterday, Dan, Molly, andย  I took our longest walkย  this year. We stayed in our neighborhood.ย  It isn’t the nice smooth paths that we have in our park walks, and the scenery is lacking.ย  There is traffic, streets to cross, and more people – so it is good for getting Molly acclimatized to more and different distractions.

Molly is getting better on our walks.ย  I have been taking her leash more and more often – and for longer periods.ย  Yesterday she did great.ย  We had one busy street to cross, so I made her sit for a break in the traffic.ย  She sat like a champ for a good two to three minutes! (We were at a crosswalk but back from the street as we didn’t want to disrupt the flow of traffic).ย

Molly did have one moment yesterday.ย  I was distracted by the uneven sidewalk (ie trying not to trip and faceplant). Molly saw two teenagers sitting at a bus stop with their backs towards us.ย  Molly, stopped suddenly stuck her head in the bus shelterย  and booped one of the young guys with her nose.ย  No harm done, but the poor guy jumped about a foot off the bench.

“She’s just friendly!” ๐Ÿคฆ

Daily Food Diary – Day 93 of 365

It has been 93 days since I began posting my Daily Food Diary.ย ย  Diet is only one aspect of the health and wellness lifestyle that I am working to adopt.

Any healthy lifestyle includes diet, activity, fresh air, sleep, and stress management.ย  When one is working to manage chronic health issues, every one of these is crucial.

Since my less than memorable appointment with the surgeon who is going to do my hernia repair, stress management has been something I have been focussing  on.ย ย  The wait time for hernia surgeries runs about 8 weeks, butย  it has been six weeks since my appointment, so it is time to get serious about this. My stress levels are better than they have ever been, but there are two major issues to deal with here – my discomfort with anything medical and the fact that stress triggers my asthma.  ๐Ÿคฆ

Several months ago, I bought myself  soft sleep headphones.ย  Normally, I go to bed listening to guided sleep meditations or soothing music.ย  Lately, I have been checking out more direct anti anxiety videos on You Tube.

I have been listening to this one for the past couple of nights.ย ย  To be honest, I had to listen to it sitting on my yoga ball yesterday, because it sounded interesting AND I would never have known  listening to it in bed.ย  I put on my headphones, turn on any form of meditation – guided, music, or nature sounds – and I am out cold. ๐Ÿ˜ด

If you should  decide to listen to it, I suggest avoiding driving while you do so.

One other thing…I may be partial to this video because the final words of advice reminded me so much of my father.ย  Whether it was something he deliberately did, or just who he was, my father lived by a personal code that saw him through every challenging situation in his life.ย ย  Regardless of anything or anyone else, my father was a man of strength, dignity, integrity, and peace.ย  ๐Ÿ’ž

Daily Food Diary – Day 92 of 365 Days

It has been 92 Days since I began tracking and posting my Daily Food Diary.

This Food Diary, which I use as a tool to become more mindful of what I consume, began on January 1st. The date was more of a coincidence than anything. ย  This was not an  impulse New Years Resolution type of thing.ย ย ย My  motivation began months earlier.

While I had never been particularly mindful of what I consumed in the past, I always thought that I had a fairly healthy, basic diet. Until…

Three years ago, I realized that consuming anything made with yeast was a major issue, causing severe digestive issues.ย  Dealing with that, made me take a better look at everything that I was eating.ย  Until…

Last summer, I experienced ‘sugar creep’ in a big way.ย  While I was blissfully unaware, I was adding more and more processed sugar to my diet.ย  It was a vicious cycle ofย  sugar highs, followed by lows, and back to the pantry for another sugar high. Until…

All of my digestive issues started coming back and my chronic lung issues flared up.ย  I finally looked at my diet – and there it was – mounds of processed sugar.ย  Cereals, deserts, toffee, candy covered nuts, store bought muffins, ice cream, soda….

By late September, I was enough of a wreck that I was ready to make a serious effortย  to become ย mindful of what I consumed on a daily basis and to make whatever adjustmentsย  were needed.ย ย

Ultimately, I decided that I would begin a Daily Food Diary on January 1st and finally that I would post it here, on my little blog, to help keep me accountable and committed for aย  full year (by which time, mindfulย  eating will hopefully be a natural part of my health and wellness lifestyle) .ย  So, here I am at Day 92 and moving forward.ย

Daily Food Diary – Day 90 of 365

It’s been 90 days – THREE FULL MONTHS since I started my Daily Food Diary and began posting it on here.๐ŸŽŠ

In March, I have been tracking and noting my protein consumption.ย  I am surprised that I not only meet, but often surpass, the daily recommended amount of protein.ย  From what I have read, too much protein can cause digestive issues.ย  Since I seldom have digestive issues since I quit eating yeast, I am not really concerned.ย  I think that between my lung issues and my genetic collagen issues, chances are I just use/need more protein in my diet.ย  If an issue ever shows up on my routine blood work, I may have to revisit that thought.

Last night we rounded off the month with a meal to a local Buffet Palace.  It is hardly fine dining, but good, basic food – and one restaurant where I can avoid yeast quite easily.

Small desert dish fyi…But Very Good

Today starts a new month and a new focus.ย  For April I am going to track my SALT and SUGAR consumption.  This one’s going to hurt.  I love both and I know neither are good for anyone – especially anyone with multiple lung conditions that cause mucus issues. ๐Ÿ˜ข

Daily Food Diary – Day 88

On January 1st,  I started tracking everything I consume each day and posting it in my Daily Food Diary.   I have never been great at keeping New Years resolutions, but I approached this more as a commitment and 88 days later, I am still on track! ๐Ÿ˜Š

Yesterday, our main meal of the day was a family affair.  Dan and I spent most of the day tidying up the house and getting supper together.

Maddy & Prim – the birthday girls
Their sister, Genie
Their Mom  Jen with her fiance Tanner
Maddy’s boyfriend Ronan with Dan

I struggle taking family photos.ย  To be honest, I think it is the family that  I have to work with.ย ย  The photo of Genie on her own  went well enough.ย  (Her fiance Alec was at work) The other three were a challenge.ย  How hard is it for TWO people to face the same direction at the same time?ย  By the time I got to Dan and Ronan, they were all over the place.ย  I am pretty sure they were trying to be difficult.  I got one shot of Dan looking at the ceiling while Ronan was looking at the floor.  ๐Ÿ™„

All in all, everything went as well as can be expected when you get a lot of family into a small house.ย  Supper went particularly well.ย  They all saidย  our first attempt at pulled pork was a win.ย  The girls chose the menu,  with a bit of tweaking.  Jen requested the brussel sprouts and Dan and I added buns and yeast free paratha bread for anyone wanting to build a pulled pork sandwich.ย  It all worked.

Daily Food Diary – Day 87 of 365

It is 87 Days since I started tracking and posting my Daily Food Diary.ย  It is 30 plus years since I was diagnosed with, and began treatment for, asthma.ย  It is 5 years since I was diagnosed, and began treatment for, bronchiectasis and COPD.ย

Over time, I have learned a few things.

First – Medications on their own (other than the antibiotics and oral steroids for acute infections) do little to manage respiratory disease.

Second  – Respiratory disease can be managed with inhalers, exercise, breathing exercises, fresh air, diet, adequate hydration, stress management, and adequate quality sleep.

Third – Management of chronic respiratory disease is a personal responsibility.    For me, this has included a lot of research and a lot of trial and error.

A few days ago, I joined a bronchiectasis group on Facebook.ย  It has been validation of what I have learned and what I have done to live reasonably well with my respiratory issues.

I have also encountered some surprising information.ย  Aย LOT of the posts I have read mention the connection between diet and respiratory health. I have seen general physicians, specialists,ย  respiratory therapists, and a dietician (regarding general allergies).ย ย  None have discussed this connection.ย  None have mentioned the prevalence of food allergies – specifically a YEAST allergy.ย  None have advised me to avoid sugar, processed foods, or dairy products.ย  Noneย have discussed proper hydration.ย ย

In Canada, we have a health care crisis. We have a shortage of doctors and healthcare workers.  We have a shortage of health and long-term care facilities.  We have a shortage of  emergency and acute care facilities.

What is really disturbing to me, is that we have a shortage of criticalย  information being passed on to people who are diagnosed with chronic respiratory issues.ย  Information that would keep people out of emergency wards and healthcare facilities.ย  Information and advice that we shouldn’t have to search out on social media. ๐Ÿคฆ
