July 11 – Miscellaneous Magic

I have experienced so many magical moments in the past few days! Being Sunday, I decided it would be a good day to share some random moments of the week with you.

This little squirrel is a regular visitor to our peanut basket. The magic this morning was that Kat just laid on the back landing and watched him make his way across our neighbours roof, onto our fence, over to our tree, and up the tree to his favourite branch. And she never barked once! Yay Kat!
Cleaning up a back corner of our yard. How magical is it, that weeds produce such pretty flowers?
Sightseeing bus that we saw in Moose Jaw on our way through. (I have a number of magical photos of Moose Jaw to share with you in another post.)
I love this magical little plaque that was mounted in the courtyard of the Cafe Paris in Gravelbourg. So cute and so true!
This is the new highschool in Gravelbourg. It is one of the last projects I worked on before I retired. I helped the architect design and write the specs for several operable partitions. I worked on the tender for the project. I handled the administration for the project when we got the job. AND – my son was one of the installers when the partitions were installed! That is the most magical part of the construction industry, being a part of a project from start to finish and ultimately seeing an amazing building that will stand for generations!
Heading home from Gravelbourg. This highway is such a narrow, winding nightmare. I cannot imagine how happy and relieved people were when it was transformed from a dirt or gravel road into a real paved highway. That must have been pure magic for them!
A magical, monster, metal lily growing beside the Gravelbourg courthouse. (Probably not growing but I don’t remember it being that big.) πŸ™„

That is it for today. I hope you enjoyed my magical moments and that you had many of your own to cherish this week.

Stay safe and see you tomorrow! πŸ’ž

July 10th – Magical Homes

There are any number of unique homes in Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan. Driving down any street, you are guaranteed to find at least a couple of magical residences. Today, I have photos to share of just a few of my favourite. πŸ’ž

Verandahs are everywhere!
How magical is that! This house was built by the local doctor. It is for sale right now for just under 350k.
South Carolina romance in Southern Saskatchewan πŸ’ž
This one is showing its age but I love the verandah! (I am pretty sure that my parents best friends used to live in this house.)
A brick house with a verandah! πŸ‘
Pretty magical for a home in small town Saskatchewan!
This home with the adorable rooftop deck has a gorgeous yard!
One summer, I dated a boy who lived in this brick house. We were both sixteen. It was magical! πŸ˜‚

It is amazing how many fantastic homes there are in Gravelbourg – and how well they have been maintained for generations. I have no idea who designed the early homes in this town or how they had the resources to build them. They obviously had a vision and the determination to carry it out.

As much as the infrastructure of this town has constantly been modernized over the years, I love how they have stayed true to their history. Even the new homes in town have the style and character to blend in with the overall ambiance.

Wishing all another beautiful, magical day! See you tomorrow with more photos from our trip this week. πŸ’ž

July 9th – Road Trip!

It was supposed to cool off this week as Dan started a run of five days off. Since it has been more than a few years since I have made a solo trip (or done any highway driving), I asked Dan if he would like to take a magical trip to Gravelbourg with Kat and I. He came, he drove, and we just got back. πŸ‘

Most of the two hour drive to Gravelbourg was relatively uneventful.
The worst part was a little rain between Moose Jaw and the turn off to Gravelbourg. This is always the worst part. This is a narrow, two way traffic, winding road. I have driven it in blizzards, gale force winds, and pouring rain. I have been caught between snowplows, in the middle of heavy construction, surrounded by a herd of pigs, and buzzed by the Airforce ‘Snowbirds’ who put on aerial acrobatic shows.

The main objective of this trip was to visit my parents gravesite, clean up anything that required cleaning and set out some fresh (immitation) flowers, to brighten thing up for them and for both of my sets of grandparents, plus my Uncle Herman who is buried with my parents.

Dan and I had not been back to Gravelbourg since Mother passed away eight years ago. We were both so worried about what kind of a neglected mess we would find at the graveyard, that we drove straight there when we arrived.

Gravelbourg graveyard – the grass is very dry but everything was neat and we’ll maintained.

We were relieved to find everything in fairly good order. In fact the entire town of Gravelbourg looks extremely well kept. The pride that the residents have in their small prairie town is obvious everywhere.

The pandemic has left its mark. There were businesses that are permanently closed. There are also many homes and businesses that are up for sale. Even these properties are well maintained.

The motel we always stayed in is still operating and, thanks to a road construction crew working on the highway to Thompson Lake, it was filled to capacity!
Kat was delighted that she had her own bed! I think we should remodel our spare bedroom as a dedicated ‘Kat’ room. Dan does not share my enthusiasm for the idea.

I took a number of photos in Gravelbourg and on our way through Moose Jaw yesterday. I will share the best in the next few days.

Magical courtyard of the Cafe Paris where we enjoyed a perfect breakfast this morning. Because we chose a table in the beautiful little courtyard, Kat was able to join us. How magical is that!

I hope you are enjoying this beautiful day! Take care and see you tomorrow. πŸ’ž

July 8th – Garden Magic

It is so magical to watch our garden grow and change every day!Β Β Β  I could spend all day outside puttering about.Β  I hope you enjoy the photos, I snapped this morning.Β  I have to stockpile them for when winter inevitably returns!

Pretty in Pink (Petunia)
Better Boy Tomatoes (Grown from a slice of fresh tomato!)
Hot Peppers
One Perfect Mini Red Pepper
First Little Cucumbers!
Miniature Magic (Just magically grew there!)
Recycled Magic

That is my magic to share for today! Dan is on ‘days off’ so I am off to enjoy his company. πŸ’ž

I hope you are having a productive and magical day!

July 7th – Morning Magic

There was something rediculously magical about being outside at 5:30 this morning. The sun was shining, there was not a breath of wind, the only sound was the birds chirping in the trees. Kat was very deliberately wandering around the yard, sniffing and searching – ensuring that all was right with her little backyard world.

Apparently, we are good to go for another magical day!

Keep safe! Wishing you peace, love, and magic to fill your day. πŸ’ž

July 6th – Magical Words

Once again, I turn to the Masters of wisdom to express what I am trying to say. πŸ’ž

“Magic is believing in yourself. If you can do that, you can make anything happen. ” – Johann Wolfgang Van Goethe
“When you look at life through eyes of gratitude, the world becomes a magical and amazing place.” – Jennifer Gayle
“Magic comes from what is inside you. It is a part of you. You can’t weave together a spell that you do not believe in.” – Jim Butcher
“The magic in this world seems to work in whispers and small kindnesses.” – Charles de Lindt
“There is a kind of magic about going far away and then coming back all changed.” – Kate Douglas Wiggins
“When you are touched by magic, nothing is ever quite the same again. What makes me really sad is all those people who have never had the chance to know that touch.” – Charles de Lint

It is time to get going and find myself some magical moments. I hope you find yours today. 🧚

July 5th – Magical Meds

Medically speaking, my husband and I are relatively fortunate.Β Β  Dan has a couple of prescriptions that he takes on a regular basis while I have a handful of inhalers that I use.Β Β  Typically, this bit of magic keeps us on our feet and out of our local health facilities.Β

Breathing easier with inhalers

Occasionally, our health issues are more acute and at times have been life-threatening.  At those times, antibiotics, blood thinners, antihistamines, and oral corticosteroids have been life savers.   On very rare occasions, prescription strength pain killers have helped us through the likes of kidney stone attacks or dental surgery.

While our health issues are relatively mild and manageable, there are countless others dealing with health issues (physical and mental) that are far more serious. Without the magic of modern medication, many lives would be short lived and/or unbearable.

Finally, unlike medications that manage, treat, or cure disease, vaccines prevent people (and animals) from even contracting a disease – or at least a severe case of the disease. That is some serious MAGIC!

Whether our medications are preventative, life enhancing, or life saving – they are modern day magic that we are fortunate to have access to when we need them.

A magical summer moment that I was able to experience and enjoy because of respiratory inhalers. πŸ€—

That is it for my magical moment today. Whether you are searching in your medicine cabinet or elsewhere today, I hope you find your own magic!

Have a great day, stay safe, and see you tomorrow! πŸ’ž

July 4th – Everyday Magic

One of the most magical moments in my life occurred when I was about five years old. The town I lived in built a water tower, installed the infrastructure, and for the first time ever, my parents got indoor plumbing. I don’t think I ever – EVER – saw my mother as happy and grateful as she was on that auspicious occasion. I have never forgotten that and to this day, sixty some years later, I never turn on a tap, flush a toilet , or pick up a garden hose without feeling the magic.

Our everyday magicπŸ’ž

I vaguely remember not having indoor plumbing. I remember my grandmother having a hand pump by her kitchen sink. I do not remember us having one. I do remember having an electric kettle that we used to boil water for doing dishes. I also remember being alone in the house the night someone forgot to unplug it. The electric cord caught fire and it was spewing millions of sparks across the kitchen – between me and the door. 😳πŸ₯ΊπŸ˜’

A hand pump like my grandmother had.

We did have an indoor washroom. I do not remember the sink or the bathtub or how they were filled or emptied. I remember the toilet. It was basically a BIG can with a toilet seat on top. Inside the can was a metal five gallon pail. I do NOT remember anyone emptying it and I have no idea where it was emptied because I do not remember us having an outhouse. If we did have an outhouse, I have no idea how that was emptied. I remember my grandparents had the same arrangement except that they they lived in a small two story house and their washroom was upstairs.

We would go to visit my grandparents for a full week every summer. I do not once remember their five gallon pail ever being emptied. Nowadays, if any of my grandchildren saw me tottering down a steep narrow stairway carrying a five gallon pail of poop, I am sure they would notice – and remember.

Kids nowadays take notice!

Living in a country like Canada, we are so used to taking conveniences like indoor plumbing for granted. It is unfortunate, because having simple access to an abundance of fresh, clean water is so much more than magical. It is a true blessing. 🀱

Kat hanging out in the pool. πŸ˜‰

That is it for my magical moments today. I hope you have a great day and that you have plenty of your own magical moments to celebrate.

Speaking of celebrating, Happy Fourth of July to our family, friends, and neighbours in the USA. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

July 3rd – Warming Up πŸŒž

We are getting our share of the heatwave this week. It is a little warm to get motivated but I have a few July ‘Magical Moments’ to share today. I hope you enjoy.πŸ’ž

The magic of modern technology yesterday when I headed out to the store. Brian Adams and air conditioning. I even tried the seat butt cooler. Jury is still out on that. πŸ˜‚
My Coral Bells (Heuchera) are starting to bloom! The blossoms attract butterflies and produce seeds which I can use the to start new plants next year. Because the seeds from a plant can be any color, irrelevant to the parent plant, next year I will have a rainbow of Heuchera plants.
And our cucumbers are finally starting to take off πŸ€—
Best magical moment for the day – our granddaughter Gabby is celebrating her sweet sixteen birthday today. Sweet she is – especially when she is doting on her little brothers! πŸŽ‚

I hope you enjoyed our July Magical Moments of the day and here is wishing you all a bit of your own magic today! πŸ’ž

July 2nd – Summer Has Arrived

Yesterday was Canada Day, my husband was home, and I was being too laid back to spend much time looking for magical moments. Fortunately, a few of them came looking for me.

We have so many yellow flowers this year, I think Mom had a hand in planting them – especially the Brown Eyed Susans.
About 50 of our lilies bloomed yesterday. I don’t know where they came from but they let us know they are here.
Close up, lilies provide so much elegance and dignity to a flowerbed.
A perfect pink blossom is always magicalπŸ’ž
This photo is from a few days ago but I love it. Our squirrel has discovered that he can avoid Kat by hiding behind the nut basket while he eats. Sneaky….
Kat’s first swim of the year – pure magic πŸ˜‚

Thank you for dropping by! I hope to see you soon.

Have a great day and if you are in this heatwave zone – keep safe!
